My p.r. for track last year was 5:45.
I really want to get 5:30 this year.

I ran a 5.38 1600 earlier this year, I can only run once every 3 days now due to shin splints and sore knees…slow running doesn’t seem to help vs. fast running, so I thought what the hell might as well do intervals twice a week. So my first goal is a 5.30 1600

The way I did it before is doing lots of intervals, it’s easier to start with shorter ones (200’s) and do longer ones as you get used to it. Try to run them at your goal mile pace, and take equal rest to intervals. So if you do 200 in 45 seconds, then you jog slow for 45 seconds in between each one, (which will usually be 1/2 the distance you ran the interval). Try to keep going for about 30 minutes total. That’s how I do it, they’re hard, but if you want to run a mile fast, you have to work hard! Once you get used to this you should be able to do 20×200 or 10×400. If you can do 10×400 well then start working on 5×800’s. I did this last summer and ran a 5.38 1600 and a 19.35 5k.

5:30 Mile, Almost there... 21 months ago

Right now I’m at about 6:20 mile, not stellar, but closer than I was before I started working on it.

    I’ll just keep on trucking!

I ran a 5:25 back in ‘04 when I had little time to train because I was studying for my MBA. As of today, I am back under 6 for the first time in 2 years. When I break 5:30, I’ll know that I am fully recovered from my thyroid/adrenal issues.

well, I'm closer 3 years ago

I’m now able to run a lap, and need to get to 2, however I’ve been indoors…and hope I haven’t retrogressed on the capabilities I’ve gained. Here’s hoping I didn’t.

My best so far is around 6 minutes- I’m hoping to get my time down to 5:40 this spring in track (I’m a freshman in high school). I’m on the cross-country ski team this winter which means I’ll get a lot of endurance training in, but I want to be careful not to lose my sprinting ability—I’ll need that for soccer as well

    5:30 Mile 3 years ago

Two years ago a guy I work with bet me $25 that I couldn’t run a 6 minute mile. Even though I hadn’t in over 10 years I knew I could and $25 didn’t seem worth it so I asked him to double it for a 5:45 mile. I did it in 5:42 and haven’t run a mile since. I’ve been getting down on myself lately for not having any goals so I thought this could get me going again.

I could use some advice on breaking this barrier if anybody has any.
