im doubting ill actually do this, but ill leave it..
How to perform in a burlesque show
How I did it: Well, after an introduction to burlesque I decided I wanted to take it that step futher and actually perform. As a larger lady, I felt it would be a brilliant thing to do, not just for me, but to maybe change some of these uninspiring stereotypes of beauty.
So I started getting my name out there, (Dee Dee LeStrange) along with my lovely burlesque partner, Madamme Melancholy and soon secured a Christmas gig.
We worked out a routine using the King as our inspiration "Santa Claus is back in Town". We practiced every week (sometimes twice) until we were confident enough we knew the whole routine from back to front. Here's a rough guide to our process:
1. Find the song - it can come to you in a flash or take days.
2. Chose a rough theme to compliment the song - this can usually be dictated by the song choice i.e. Christmas, Circus/Carnival, traditional, neo-burlesque etc
3. Work out the story behind the performance - this will help you figure out the style of dance, props required, clothes worn etc
4. Play the song over and practice - most of the time we have the song on loop and practice different moves in front of a mirror to see how it looks.
5. Settle on a whole routine and practice practice practice!
6. Make sure you have all your props way before the show and relax....or not!
And thats about it!
Lessons & tips: Other points to remember are:
- Stage space - check the venue if you have never been before. Often space can restrict routines
- Chose a burlesque name which embodies the image you want to communicate to others
- Get some professional photos done. It helps for promo and showing you at your most fabulous!
- Set up a myspace/facebook under your burlesque name, spreading the word that you are looking for gigs. This also helps you network with other acts in your area.
- Make sure you are comfortable and safe at all times. Seek out reputable burlesque freindly venues and don't be aftraid to get in touch with other performers. Most of the girls (and guys) we've met have been lovely and so encouraging

It’s just so sexy! Seems so liberating, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to try this.
Got a name, and less than 2 weeks to get my sh*t together for a Feb. 18th show!
performing is liberating, in any form and burlesque is that much more, when done in a way the performer/creator feels good about.
it’s such a breath of fresh air in these times of tacky overdone music videos & never-ending porno images.
your body is yours. have fun with it!
this one is already half way there as i have just got involved with a local burlesque troupe so hopefully soon i will be ready to perform
