etandksmom is starting the 30 day challenge.
I don’t think I’m in physically great condition but I’d like to get in shape to climb a mountain that’s 14,000 feet.
How I did it: I signed up and went along with a group. Several had climbed before. I highly recommend going early in the day and going with people who have climbed a 14er before.

Skipped right from Mount Humphreys at 12,663 feet in Arizona right up to Ishinca, which clocks in at a hefty 18,143 feet. We climbed it in a mix of whiteout and overcast conditions up the northeast ridge, which featured some 50m or so sections of 45-50 degree ice. Surprisingly I didn’t have many altitude issues, just a slight headache but I think that was more from dehydration than anything else – we’d spent a week and a half acclimating already for the climb. I loved the area and am already plotting about what to climb next there…
With Ben, a few years ago. My first fourteener. And all the pictures are in my head, instead of on disc/film. That’s probably the way it ought to be.
This is a walkup, but a long hike in. We backpacked in, camped overnight, headed the wrong way in the morning, and got caught in a sleet storm above tree line on the way down. Seeing lightning below us was a bit freaky. Didn’t get to hear any rocks humming, and there was no hair standing on end, but we got out of there as fast as we could.
14,005 ft / 51st highest peak
With Kathleen, 14 July 2006. Pretty dirty air that day…this is facing West from the top of Grays (Torrey’s is off to the right/North). the speck in the sky is an eagle or a hawk of some sort. Saw mountain goats for the first time in the wild!
Grays and Torreys peaks are total walk-ups – not even any scrambling involved (just the way I like them, wuss that I am). Not too busy that day, even though it’s right off I-70. Note to self: take Gatorade next time instead of plain water.
Grays: 14,270 feet / 9th highest peak in Colorado
Torreys: 14,267 / 11th highest peak in Colorado
I climbed Gray’s Peak in Colorado this past weekend. It is 14,270 feet tall. It was very difficult, even for me, a native Coloradoan! But it was so worth it to reach the summit and reflect on my achievement while looking down on other mountains from the top of the world!
