How to get a teaching job

How I did it: I worked my butt off in graduate school and I networked like a madman. In the end, my stellar letters of recommendation from my TA and tutoring jobs and informal recommendations I got from two colleagues ended up scoring me a teaching position at a local community college (in the middle of a budget crisis, no less!). I also have been hired by the school that just granted me my MA to teach an upper division class over summer (and hopefully fall as well!) Lessons & tips: Work on campus in graduate school. Study hard. Become valuable. NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. |

How I did it: I moved somewhere where they are in need of teachers. Went to a job fair, set up interviews and finally got offered a position! I substituted before, I work as an assistant. Not exactly the ideal economic climate to be graduating in, but I keep hearing that when the economy tanks, community college enrollment goes up. Let’s hope that’s true (and that they need more instructors this coming fall!)
well i keep on applying to positions, but have only gotten sub papers for a school. i still havent gotten letters of recommendation, so i have to get that done this week. i am applying for an education and training position at the rape action center tomorrow, which might be perfect for me. i hope it goes well! its not a high school teaching position, but i dont want to limit myself to that. i would really find a job at this place fulfilling.
still sending out resumes, but i really don’t want to move out of the area, so i would like to focus on getting a job locally. the problem with that is that people are not getting their letter of recommendation to me, which holds up my application for the city schools, since my application needs to be complete before i apply. Also my certification is not even sent out yet. I am getting a physical for it today, which is the last thing i have to do. i would like to at least start subbing soon, but nothing seems to be coming along.
i sent out cover letters and resumes to about 20-25 schools in the area last week. this week i’m working on finishing up the paperwork for my certification. i have time this week to really put myself out there to find something…i hope i get some calls!

I have to finish school before I can work towards this goal but I would eventually like to be a substitute teacher.

It’s not time yet, so no pressure. However, I have three schools in my sights as my top choices. Is this possible? I shall find out in a year or so!
It’s really hard to not get discouraged. I have loans to pay, and a job that’s barely getting me by at a daycare. I wish I could just get a teaching job already!

I signed a contract with a church school Wednesday. I’ll be teaching 5th & 6th grade this fall. I’m so excited!
