How to organize my computer files

How I did it: Had to get rid of the viruses and adware before I could do anything. Then I downloaded some updates that I've been meaning to have. Then I trashed everything I didn't need and organized everything I wanted to keep. If you haven't used a program in years you probably aren't going to so delete those too - more space for the things you actually use. Lessons & tips: Don't put it off. Now my computer runs faster, stopped crashing, and best of all I know where everything is! Resources: My mouse and the recycle bin. |

How I did it: I made new files and categorised everything. Was quite good, until I stumbled a file from someone else on the computer (Im 17 and still live at home, so our family share the computer). Finally got more of my stuff over from my old laptop (I still have things to transfer from my 98SE computer). A good part of what I have on my laptop is already organized, I just need to go through and clear out a bunch of stuff I don’t really need, then organize that. :P
The task almost seems impossible. I don’t know whats there (beyond everything). I’m not sure how to begin.

The thing that started all this was about a week ago I started to download lots of stuff. The torrent files were all on my desktop (I hate icons on my desktop). Then I wanted to keep seeding the things I downloaded to get my seed/leech ratio up…but alas, I need to organized everything since I can’t stand having the files on the desktop. Then I decided to pull out my old external harddrive that has been messed up for awhile. Now it is working for some strange reason and only corrupted 2 files I had on there. After taking the 100gigs of stuff off that and putting them on my computer I know need to organize the files from that drive, my computers drive, and the 2nd external drive I have, not to mention a few Data DVD discs I have….This will take me awhile.

I’ve stalled due to a pesky song that I can’t find an album or single for. Just seems to have appeard on my computer. Do I just delete it otherwise I’ll not be able to move on? I swear this is the only reason I didn’t continue with it after being so motivated.

I’m constantly keeping my computer files a pretty good shape. I use a little Mac preference program called Hazel which helps keep my desktop clean and organizes my downloaded files. Apple’s application, Automator is also very useful for file and folder organization.

...well, damn. I’m being forced into this before I wanted to be. All of my computer files are on the desktop now, due to me contracting about EIGHT TROJANS for god unknown reasons. ): I can’t do a thing anymore. Time to reinstall the operating system once I can clear off the really large files.

By ‘organise’ I mean make sure all files are correctly named, placed, in order and with album art for music files. Expecting it to take a few weeks.

Not too bad of progress. I’ve sorted most of my pictures by series, deleted a lot of old pictures taken of me that I didn’t like. I still have a bit to go, but it’s a lot better than before. I combined everything from my Windows 95 and Windows 98SE with my laptop files, and now I just need to combine the laptop and desktop files. THEN I have to place them all on an external.
Doing well so far, though.
A couple of months ago my computer got a virus. This was a great time to backup all my files. Fortunately, I was able to get rid of the virus so I didn’t need to reformat my hard drive.
I am also eagerly anticipating the arrival of The Sims 3 and realized I had to get rid of some stuff to make room for it.
