cara_lynn007 is ch-ch-chillin!! :)
every time i mean to grow it out, my mom takes me to “get it trimmed” and it ends up perpetually shoulder length lol no more!! it’s an inch past my shoulders right now, i only want… 4-5 more inches
How I did it: This took some time, but I was able to do it. First thing I did back in about 2000 was to cut out all of the relaxed/chemically treated hair off my head. I had to allow my hair to grow back to its natural state. This took some time because my hair had been chemically treated since 1983. It took about 3 yrs for my hair to get back to its most nap-tural state. I continued to wear my hair in a short cut until 2005. I cut it ALL the way down as much as I could take. From then on I deep conditioned my hair daily (I could do this as I was living in the deep south), washed once a week, kept my hair moisturized by putting loc gel in it & occasionally a leave in conditioner as well to add some fragrance to it every once in a while. Finally in the summer of 2008 I went to a local beautician after relocating to NY to have my hair washed conditioned and flat ironed and its length was to my shoulders. which it is still today without the straightening.
Lessons & tips: With tightly curly, natural hair like mine, it is ESSENTIAL that it is moisturized daily. It is not true that people of African descent cannot wash their hair on a daily basis. By wash, I mean get wet. What did during my hair growing period was condition my hair daily, and wash once a week. I used the Organic Root Stimulator (r) products. They worked for me personally (this is not an endorsement, you have to go by your hair texture and type. See a qualified natural hair beautician.) Another lesson that I learned even when I was growing up, DO NOT allow people who do not have your hair type to do your natural hair. This is because the majority of people in the U.S. do not know how to style or properly care for black hair. Its always best to see a black beautician whether you have a natural or chemically treated hair.
Resources: Zayd's Naturally Natural Hair Studio on Almeda in Houston, TX did a wonderful job styling my natural hair. They are highly recommended. My personal stylist was Zaneta Hill. If you don't find yourself fortunate enough to have a stylist, you can go to sites like Nappturality to get styles, hair care tips and suggested products submitted by the site owner and users who are going through the transition or already gone back to having a natural hair style.

Bandito_91 is thinking deeply about life
Well, I’ve never had long hair in my life. I’ve always had short spiky hair or fades and stuff like that but now, I’m letting it grow. I don’t want it too long like down to my shoulders, no way….just guy longer i guess anyway…only problem is it takes a while and right now it doesn’t look real good and I also have a job interview in a few days and I might have to cut my hair to look more presentable…ohhhh man I really wanted to let my hair grow all summer long…

It’s getting a lot longer.. I’m hoping it’ll be super long by the time prom comes.. April 17th..

it’s getting longer again… which excites me.. but, I realize how long it’s got and I get sad thinking what if I didn’t cut it?
Yesterday I was so close to chopping the bit of hair I have off. It’s so hard! Especially for someone who used to cut her whenever she felt like. But I want to teach myself discipline and I want long hair for the summertime.
It’s just now growing past my shoulders.. and I would like for it to grow to my breasts. I have 3 months of time for it to do so.
it’s not that it looks that bad,it’s just that it takes forever to get in shape and that i am fed up with short hair….ok now it looks like this…

I’m still at an awkward stage, but my hair is getting longer and longer… :)

I cut all of my hair off in May 2006, well as short as I could bear. I haven’t cut my hair since that time. Right now my hair is in an awkward stage. It’s too long to wear a regular afro, but its too short to braid. So at this time I’m taking the ‘easy’ way out. My daily routine is to rinse and condition my hair. I comb through my hair with the conditioner in it to remove any tangles and shedding hair. After the final rinse, I squeeze any excess water out of my hair. If I still feel that its too wet, I may pat dry twice. The secret of keeping my hair shiny and oiled is using a product called loc&twist gel. It has soybean oil in it which helps keep my hair moist. I use the gel liberally. Aftewards to complete the look I put a tight head band on and pull my hair back.
As my hair continues to grow, I will add more styling tips as they come to mind. Because that’s how it usually happens, Sitting in front of the mirror.
