I need to find out more info about mixing and maybe have a go at mixing, anyone got any tips or hints to get me started?!
I am not only the owner of working decks, but i am now collecting some decent records…put your hands up for Detroit!!!!!
Balanced and tuned in by a friend who has agreed to teach me how to mix and get me into the ‘scene’!!! :-)
Mixing is one of the best things i’ve ever chosen to do in my life. Next to having played drums for 7 years. And just about to pick up the key board. So you see i’m pretty musical. I completly love music in every genre, format or innovation. This is what gave me the dedication and determination to learn. It cost a damn lot of money to start up so it’s only worth it if you really, really want to. I’ve been mixing drum and bass since March ‘06 and just coming in to july I can now mix and know most the theory behind to allow my self to experiment with the tunes to make bigger and better mixes. Defo worth a try, think of the possibilities.
The actual “skill” required to learn basic mixing can honestly be learned over the course of a couple of nights.
If possible, find a friend with decks that’s got similar taste in music to you. Go to radio shack and pick up a 1/4” jack splitter (not standard headphone size – one size bigger). If necessary, get a 1/8” to 1/4” adaptor for your headphones.
Arrive at your pals house with your headphones, headphone splitter and plenty of beers with which to bribe your pal. Get him/her to play as they normally would, but allow you to listen in to how they’re cueing up the music. Once this starts to make sense to you, ask them to beat match two records and let you have a shot at mixing them. You’ll quickly see that it’s not terribly difficult to do, everything after this is just practise and dedication/innovation.
Of course, if you don’t have a friend with decks you’re kinda screwed ‘cause all the gear costs an ass-load.
Not to mention being able to brag. Don’t expect anything else apart from those two things, and an attitude towards all kinds of commercial music your friends will hate :)
Within the past 4 or 5 years Ive have been getting into ‘dance’ music. Before then I used to hate it and think it wa all the same pre-programmed rubbish. Within the past 2-3 years Ive been getting heavily into Techno and found it to ba a very intelligent form of expression. I would like to get my own decks, mixer and vinyl collection, but it is a very expensive hobby which requires some serious dedication… who knows.. I may get at it yet
