This goal was prompted by a small ad in my local paper which publicised the guest speaker at an upcoming meeting of a writers’ group based in the city. Unfortunately, having made my enquiries, it seems the group is structured more like a formal course of study running from September to April. Alas, I was hoping for more of a boho turn-up-anytime, bring-a-bottle (and a book) type of affair!
Apparently there is another group somewhere nearby which might let me complete this goal as soon as I would like but I have next to no information about them other than an old programme of events from 2 years ago without names or contact numbers that I happened across online.
The plot thickens…

One great way to find a group is to take some creative writing classes at a university. The professors are generally all published authors whose income depends on people like you and me pursuing the craft.

muddart is really, really tired, but can't sleep
I know there are some around here, but want to find the RIGHT one for me. I really desire a supportive environment, but where people do give good helpful constructive criticism.
Also, (this might be to much to ask) wouldn’t mind a group where there are discussions happening other than ONLY people reading their works. I really would love a group where we discuss the process of writing as well, and share our insights with one another on what we have learned about writing well and writing deeply.

Struggling poet and writer, known as “cafĂ© ground zero” and formerly as “jean-pierre” (in Memphis and New Orleans) wishes to establish contact and participate in writers’ group (s) located along the Northwest Highway or in the Lakes region around Cary and Oak Hll Grove, in or near McHenry County.
I have a B.A. in Modern Languages from Knox College. I’ve been published in The Galesburg Post; The Tundra Drums of Bethel, Alaska; the Glennville Sentinal, Georgia; La Voz Latina, of Savannah Georgia, and Blue Collar Review or Norfolk Virginia.
My main writer’s goal now is to combine a novel with a non-fiction work whose subject is yet to be revealed.

At my school, a couple people started a writing group called Stylus. We’ve had so much fun the past two years, and not only improved writing but knitted a close group of friends. It’s been so much fun, you should definitely just go for it. Even if you do it differently than we did, you’ve got nothing to lose. You can improve your writing and make lasting friendships, and have tons of fun doing it!

I am very happy that Iam here.Writing is pleasure but it will be encouraging only when someone reads and give their views. This should be really motivating.
One should take the suggestions in the right spirit. When someone disproves our writing we should not take it as a setback but a progress. When there is a comment we are forced to think more on the subject which helps one to improve. So a writer must be ready for comments than for cheers.
Hope I am able to share knowledge here and learn more. When we share our knowledge we feel happy as we learn more.

This is somewhat linked to the goal of finding my tribe. I want to be in touch with like-minded, creative people that are serious about their art and want to get better and help other people improve.
I’ve worked with on-line groups and meeting in person and prefer the later, though I’m open to the on-line experience. The only criteria I’d insist on is that the group focus on the work itself, not ‘sharing ideas’ or advice on how to submit. Those things can be there, but it has to be focused on putting words on paper and seeing if those words move the reader.
