How I did it: Tour bus from Beijing. It's a great experience to walk on the wall. But, there are some kind of sad drawbacks -- aggressive vendors are lining the entire length of the Great Wall trying to sell stupid trinkets. New China means selling out and putting giant billboards along the stretch of the Great Wall too. |

Have organized a last minute weekend trip with a few girlfriends, where we definitely plan on walking the Great Wall. After doing my research, I am pushing for us to visit the Mutianyu section, where it will hopefully be less crowded and less touristy than Badaling, since it’s about an hour’s drive out of Beijing itself.
I’m excited!
Was one of the coolest days of my life. The weather was beautiful (had just rained) and we visited a section of the wall that not many tourists visit. It was just me and a few friends, way up on the top of a mountain on the wall….overlooking everything. Unforgettable. Usually photos can capture the beauty, but even my photos of it are amazing!

I’m going to DHL to pick up my visas to enter Canada & China.
Hopefully if everything is alright, I’ll be able to book my hotels today and start packing on the weekend.
This will be one of my best trips ever!!!

My flight leaves on August 23, if everything goes according with the plan I’ll be walking on the Great Wall with my mother on Thursday 25 August, 2009.

Assuming China will still be beautiful and not completely polluted and over crowded
Go to JinShangLing and walk to Simatai (approx 10 kms.), take food and water and stay over to sleep in one of the towers. I did it with two of my friends and it was incredible. At the end, near the part where you can take the zip line accross the river in Simatai, you can find a spot where you can swim next to the Great Wall too! Beware of the stupid guards though… they thought it was indecent when we did it. Anyways, it took them like half an hour to realize we were there.
Dont go to the touristy boring parts.
