More "How I Did It" stories
How I did it: It's easy - just use your legs to walk! Bring lots of water because you'll get thirsty. Oh, and a camera to take photos. It's fun if you try racing up and down the steps with a friend. Read how I did it…
How I did it: Anyone visting Beijing can easily do this. Just take one of the many available bus tours and you are there. In the end however, you are just walking on the top of a high stone wall. If it was not "The Great Wall of China" it would not be memorable... but it's still fun to say you did it. Read how I did it…

Go to JinShangLing and walk to Simatai (approx 10 kms.), take food and water and stay over to sleep in one of the towers. I did it with two of my friends and it was incredible. At the end, near the part where you can take the zip line accross the river in Simatai, you can find a spot where you can swim next to the Great Wall too! Beware of the stupid guards though… they thought it was indecent when we did it. Anyways, it took them like half an hour to realize we were there.
Dont go to the touristy boring parts.

I am going to do this.
I AM going to do this this year.
I am going to do this AND MORE!
This was probably the most incredible experience that I’ve had while traveling. There is an area in Simitai that is much less touristy than the other areas, so you will get a much better experience there. At the end of the walk (approx. 10-12 km) you can take a zip-line across a small river to get down from the wall. Amazing!!
I didn’t expect it to be such a difficult climb! It’s quite steep in some places and even though I’m in relatively good shape, it wore me out! Of course, the hot humid weather didn’t help much either.
Do it… definitely!

I went with 19 of my classmates on foreign study to China. First ten days of being in China, we toured various cities, and we scaled the Great Wall of China. Very steep in some places.

This is a goal that I plan to complete when I visit Beijing next year. It would be something that would be genuinely impressive to visit. We are hoping to be able to do it without paying a fortune to a tour operator by using public transport.
