Using Doors, ispeakhindi and various other sites I’m doing well, I can already solve basic word puzzles and read a few basic words in devanagari. My boyfriend is proud.

I would really like to speak Hindi. After seeing a controversial movie called water I thought it would be great to learn. It is a beautiful sounding language and it would help on my resume.
supergurl getting on track :-)
1. read hindi for half an hour everyday
2. learn 10 new words everyday
3. write 10 lines in hindi everyday
should be able to see a fairly good progress after a month
I’m taking online Hindi classes at Edufire, dabbling with the free Livemocha resources (not the best, but they’re free and chat with native speakers is free) and using a bunch of different websites and books. I don’t practice as much as I’d like to, but the weekly online classes at Edufire keep me on track. Every week I understand more and more of what they are singing and saying on Namaste America and in Hindi movies. Cool!
cgw33 is planning.
I’ve begun this project well. Practicing at least an hour a day, every day.
I’m a little nervous about the outcome of this project, since my years of German never really paid off with fluency. But I’m hoping that actually learning on my own will be more productive. I’m certainly more motivated than I was in high school.
I have started using Byki express. At first I did not like the fact that it does not spell out Hindi phrases in Roman characters, but I have found that this help one to learn recognize sounds in Devanagari. I highly recommend this language learning tool. It also hosts dozens of other languages.

Well learning Devanagari is not easy but I will persevere. In the mean time I will move on to phases and come back to consonants and vowels in a couple of days when I have a few basic phases down. I haven’t even began to look at conjuncts, as I want to feel comfortable with the basic consonants and vowels first.
The following resource seems helpful:

I will also look into finding a native speaker in my area to help out once or twice a week.
I want to learn hindi so I can communicate more effectively when I travel to India but also as a stepping stone to learning classical Indian languages (Sanskrit and Pali) so as to study ancient Indian texts
