Drink Scotch

I love scotch. :) I’m not really a connoisseur. I drink Johnnie Walker, black label.

But not so much lately. I believe I would still enjoy and appreciate. I’m stationed in Germany gight now, so maybe I’ll make a trip to Scotland while I’m still in Europe. When you’ve got German beer available it’s not often that you wish for alternatives! Of course all on hold now while I’m deployed to Iraq…

People who love scotch will swear by single-malts, but most of us started with blended scotches. Blendeds tend to have a milder and/or more accessible taste. Single malts have more character, which makes them less accessible to a beginner but more rewarding to a connoisseur. I’d recommend Johnny Walker or Chivas Regal when you’re starting out. Personally, I don’t like the latter that much because I don’t think it has much character. But it’s quite smooth, and so would be an OK starter. When you want to get a little risky, pick up my favorite blended: Dewar’s. Little bit of spice, and more distinct than a lot of blendeds. In fact, I think I might have to pour a glass right now.

Before I go, though, I just have to brag about my best bottle. For my 30th birthday a couple years ago, my wife bought me a 30-year-old bottle of Laphroaig. Yummy. We break it out for special occasions, obviously, and when we do it’s oh so good.

Scotch is fantastic, you outta start having a glass now-and-then right now. I’ll be happy to recommend some brands/distilleries I’ve liked and steer you clear from others.

tutu the grandma swears by it, sahala the boyfriend loves it, dad drinks it with crushed ice…why can’t i even choke it down? gin and tonic anyone?
