I have never done anything in my life like this before. I think it would be kind of scary but totally cool
How to take a volunteer vacation
How I did it: I felt like I was going through the motions most of the time - work, friends, family, etc. I had been taking a Spanish class, and decided that if I quit my job, I would go somewhere where I could learn Spanish and work with kids, since I'd done a similar trip. This time, though, I wanted to be gone for a while and really be immersed. I started looking up all kinds of organizations online, reading blogs, newsletter articles, anything to determine whether or not these organizations were legit. I found VE Global, applied, and then waited to be accepted. I had to do a couple of interviews over the phone and a pretty intensive application. But I was accepted, made arrangements to go and took off for four months.
Lessons & tips: Be as prepared as possible, but go with an open mind. I learned so much!

I want to travel somewhere with a purpose and leave with the knowledge that I have done even just a little bit to help make stranger’s lives better.

i saw an article about “quirky ways to travel” or something like that on msn.com. i had no idea things like this even existed! i’m starting to research it and i think it sounds like an awesome experience. i’d love to get one or both of my parents to go on one of these trips with me, it’d really be an amazing memory.
XaymacaNomad is working on her first 5 things
Today Hurricane Dean is due to hit Xaymaca, where I was born. I wish I could fly in next week to help. My Dad thinks that I am crazy for wanting to fly into the aftermath of hurricane. I remember living through the direct hit of one in 1988. We stayed down for a whole day. We then had no power for one year. I read a lot (by lamplight) between age 12 and 13 because there was no TV. But we were alive. Looking back it was not so bad.
Hope today, Hurricane Dean misses Xaymaca and that if it doesn’t…it will have a bit of pity.
I volunteered in St Bernanrd Parish outside of New Orleans last fall for vacation and I would definitely recomend it. I met a lot of cool people and felt a real sense of acomplishment. If anyone needs contacts there or wants to get involoved message me I will definitely help you out. They need as many as are willing.
Well I applied for a weeklong stint in Mississippi doing post Katrina rebuilding. We’ll see if I get in.
