as i am learning c-programming and other stuff, i came accross unix and i entered for learning this..
How to master UNIX
How I did it: I did it the hard way. Plunging into it and finding my way around.
It's not difficult in the sense of "complex", but rather in the sense of "insane crapload of information to go through, absorb and keep." Like learning to speak a new language and having to learn all the vocabulary, maybe also a little bit of grammar, like verb conjugation.
Lessons & tips: Plunge into it, read a lot and never give up. And don't pull your hair out.

I’m a stranger to unix, and also linux but i’ve done small amounts of playing around with both. I’ve been using windows OS computers for over 6 years and am finally going to make a definate move to take on freebsd unix.
I’m fairly decent with computers, just not programming as I’ve never really made a significant attempt to learn a language.
So I’ve made it a goal to really have a good go with freebsd, being the fact I’ve really seen the potential for the os to work for me with the small amount I’ve had to do with it.
I’ve been using Unix for nearly 10 years now, and believe I have finally mastered it. There isn’t much that seems to stand in my way anymore, outside of distribution / version specific things.
It’s not just read, read, read. It’s also do, do, do. Grab an old box and install BSD or Linux on it. Experiment. The man pages and Google are your friends.
I’ve been using Unix as a hobbiest for over 10 years, but now I do it professionaly. Needless to say, I love it. I am working with RedHat Enterprise Linux and AIX 5.3. Once you get a handle on the sometimes cryptic command set, day to day system administration becomes very easy. I truly appreciate the fact that I can ask the system a question, and it actually gives me an answer. No more guessing at what is going on behind the scenes as I often had to do in my Windows sysadmin days.
I’ve set an aggressive set of goals to achieve this year, all of which I’ll probably build a new ‘thing’ for.
1) Obtain Weblogic 8.1 Certification
2) Obtain my RHCE Certification
3) Obtain a basic AIX Certification
4) Develop SOPs and standard documentation for all of my systems
The list is even longer in my workplace, but does not need to be drawn out here.
Well, I don’t have much of a choice but to master UNIX as I just transferred to the UNIX support team at work here.
For the best, I’m sure.
