    Gore Vidal made me want to read Maugham by saying that any good writer of his generation owed a debt to the author of Of Human Bondage. Since Vidal has been right so many times for me – he recommended Frederic Prokosch, Virginia Woolf, Martin Amis, Jeanette Winterson & John Horne Burns, all of whom are now favorites – why not also try Maugham?
