How I did it: My wife & I had been looking for a new bed for a while. One day she called the thrift store just down the road from our house and they said they had a couple of beds real cheap. I was skeptical, but we went down there on my lunch break and scoped out the selection. We found a barely used bed that was normally $1,000.00 and got it for $50.00. It would have to be one of the best $50 I've ever spent. Read how I did it…

I want to have an easily reachable target in my life :) estimated and required time to finish is 2 week (when I got my next paycheck; anyway i broke it in the last night)
my bed’s a bit old – it’s on it’s second mattress. thing is, it’s quite big and bulky – a wooden frame and i could do with a smaller metal frame, really. it would also give more room in the bedroom…budget would have to be about £200 though
screwyourselfup yep
so many people seem to be against futons.
i find it strange.
i’m getting one when i get paid.
My back isn’t used to sleeping on a decent mattress, and I’m sure it will take awhile longer to get used to it, but I still think this was one of the best investments I have made in a long time. A good night’s sleep really does affect everything!
I went a little crazy – I set a larger budget than I ended up needing for the mattress and box, so I got an inexpensive bedroom set, too! They’ll be delivered sometime before the end of the month. I’m so looking forward to a healthy mattress!
My mattress/box spring were manufactured in 1955. I doubt anybody thought it would still be slept on in 2008, but I have the joy of snuggling in between the springs every night . . . It’s been better than the floor that came before, but it’s time for something that’s a bit better for healthy sleep.
My beautiful bed arrived today. I’ve since assembled it and I’m writing this entry while all snuggled up in its glorious expanse. This has made me happy.
I’ve been hemmin’ & hawin’ over what bed frame to get as I didn’t particularly like any of the ones I’ve been seeing so it was really trying to narrow it down to something I could live with (and afford) and that was the cheap part, then I had to give great thought to the mattress and oh lordy that part was stressful.
Then last night my friend suggested I check out bedshed and first bed on the homepage is EXACTLY the bed I’ve been looking for. The ‘free mattress’ I was assuming to be shite but was trying to talk myself into accepting it. For some reason, I was feeling guilty at the idea of spending a lot of money on a bed—as if I was taking food from a child and well, there ain’t a child and there ain’t gonna be a child and damnit I’m worth it. As my Great-Grandmother used to say, “you should always invest in good shoes and good bed, the rest you can skimp on …”.
More waffling this morning until I finally couldn’t stand arguing with myself anymore and I stormed off to at least look at the bed and check out the different mattresses available.
Of course I fell for the expensive mattress. Oh my gawd, this is a foam bed very similar to the tempurpedic (sp) but not quite as much money. I lay there thinking—if I buy this it is going to take a while to pay off, am I ready to acquire that debt.
And you know what? I am ready. The momentary indecision had nothing to do with the choice, it had to do with my guilt about spending money on myself (yes, I know I need therapy). Realizing I’d been laying on the bed in the middle of the shop for nearly ten minutes while having an inner (I hope) dialogue, I got up and told the man I’d take it. We set the delivery date for next Friday (when I’m off work), he threw in the mattress pad for free, and then I handed over my piece of plastic and prayed it wouldn’t melt from the new charge. Hell, at least I get miles for the purchase!
I’m completely ecstatic and hope that I’ll be able to assemble this bad boy all by myself.
