I’ve travelled 5-6 hours to visit my family by myself many times. I mention these trips because the drive is absolutely beautiful during any season. I go through the mountains and I absolutely love it. It’s so relaxing for me.
My most memorable trip alone, though, was from Texas to Wyoming. I drove through New Mexico and Colorado (as well as Texas and Wyoming, of course). I did some sight-seeing along the way, camped out, hiked, took some side road trips, and took lots of pictures. Well worth it and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
Now I have my beautiful children to keep me company. I go on road trips alone with them fairly often. I started travelling with them when they were young—I think both of them were about 2 months old the first time they travelled with me to visit my family. My son hasn’t been anywhere other than to visit my family or to visit my husband’s family (3-4 hours away) but my daughter and I drove down to spend a week with my brother, his wife, and their kids. That was a 10-12 hour trip. Both of the kids are great travellers, thankfully. 5 years ago

I love travelling by myself for it allows time and space for spiritual reflection and emotional rejuvenation. Our thoughts are entrusted to a lonely highway and the silence of the night and our dreams are given wings to incubate under a silvery moon.
One of my favourite destinations is the Hunter Valley in Southern NSW. A prominent wine growing area in Australia, the Hunter provides spectacular vistas of the surrounding mountains fringing upon rows of grape vines. I’ve taken the trip a few times, stayed at a beautiful hotel skirting one of Pokolbin’s many vineyards and enjoyed luxuriating in the spectacular countryside.
It’s an 11 hour trip down to the Hunter Valley and then another 11 hours to return so it is granted that I have at least a day to ponder in deep reflection upon the course of my life whether I want to or not! It’s a great chance to escape, have a glass of award winning wine, enjoy lunch on the sunlit restaurant deck at the Hunter Valley Gardens and find for a few moments that balance that we desperately try to attain in our working week. The perfect gift of solitude… 5 years ago

I was drove from Houma LA to Conroe TX by myself. It was only 6 hours, but that was the longest time I have ever been in a car / on the road alone. It was actually a lot of fun. I listened to loud music and had the windows down the whole way. The time flew by! 6 years ago

this is totally worth it. You get to see things for yourself, have time to think about things and make all the decisions to please yourself without worrying about being selfish! I’ve done this several times and I can’t recommend it enough!
Happy travels, everyone! 6 years ago

I’ve done this several times in the past. It has usually been a helpful way to gain some distance – literally and figuratively – from my current situation, and has often allowed me to return to my life with a clearer head. Driving on the open road is great thinking/processing time. And it’s nice to just go and do whatever it is you feel like, unhampered by anyone else’s needs or expectations. 6 years ago

Late June is Ozzfest…. In MA.
There’s also an outdoor DMB concert in NY… I forget the lineup, but it was killer, and there’s a game at Fenway Park Sunday afternoon following.
I can’t decide between the two. They’re in the same price range, and both sound like a blast. It takes a lot to beat out DMB and MLB, but Ozzfest is sure to give you stories you can tell ‘till the day you die… 6 years ago

do this before - i think before i became fearful. i do adore traveling, i used to go on train rides by myself, i used to go on planes by myself – i used to actually travel up and down the east coast - now? i rarely travel and i have a tendancy to backtrack.
i need to remember how it was to be young and carefree…except now i have credit cards. 6 years ago
