I got a good cusp-of-season deal at a time when I REALLY need to get outta Dodge (we’d been doing the cocooning thing for a year—my husband’s preference when stressed…Mine is adventure!). We rented an older houseboat (think those boxy campers from the late 70s with the stripes down the sides) on the Canada side of Lake Koocanusa and spent a week on a sandbar alone with acres and ACRES of white sand. We had preschoolers to teens, and it was awesome all around.

Luxury’s available, too, of course, from other vendors on the same lake – houseboats with TVs, stereo systems, fancy hot tubs, and video game consoles. But frankly – what’s the point then of taking the kids on vacation?!
