so i paid alot to get my grandmothers sewing machine restored. something is wrong with it, because everytime i plug it in it starts running automatically, and i dont know what to do to correct it. i havent made the effort yet to try and fix it and learn to use it, and it has been about a year since i got it done.

I took my machine in over the weekend to be repaired. I’m not crossing this off my list, though, until it’s back home, safe and sound.
well now I glad that the shop was shut, I’d have resented paying for what I’ve just done – I found my little 80 year old manual and realised that the big fly wheel and little wheel can sort of switch to off so I fiddled and it seems to be working again. I’ll not be doing anything heavy duty with this machine as I’ll be getting an electric one that does fancy stuff like zig zag and button holes for christmas! But I’m glad that I’ve not broken one of the few antiques I have, I can retire it happily now :-)
its a blimmin heavy antique singer – one of those ones you have to crank the handle on, but its served me well, till a couple of months ago when 4 layers of curtain proved too much for it.
Hauled it to the sewing machine repair shop to find it closed at 1/4 to 4? If its closed at 1/4 to 4 on a week day just when is it open???
i have an old singer that dreams of making curtains and altering t-shirts. someday… someday….

I don’t think it’s broken! The mechanism itself seems to be working fine.
However, I think the presser foot is wrong, somehow – it does not look like the one on my mom’s (identical) machine, and it does not work for any except the narrowest stitches. I think someone must have used it to replace the original presser foot.
I’m going to go looking for a new one sometime this week – then all I have to do is remind myself how to thread the thing, and I should be in business.
