I’ve wanted to do this ever since junior high. Taking trips to the campground or an amusement park by means of a large van packed with kids was great adventure for me. I looked forward to the grown-up version, which I imagined being like the psychadelic love child of Road Trip and a Britney Spears movie. I love driving, blasting down roads that roll and curve dangerously, and wandering freely, discovering things you don’t see on the interstate.

How to take a road trip with no predetermined destination"Every time I do this, something personal and special happens."
How I did it: One of my favorite things to do is ride around by myself with no set destination in mind - I often find new ways of getting places or discover spots I never would have found in my normal travels. These have included an old, abandoned school built in 1907, a hauntingly beautiful cemetery from the mid-1850s, to what was left of a long-gone plantation I'd been studying for many years; that's just to name a few! Lessons & tips: For my personal, little day trips here are a few suggestions: Resources: 1) A cell phone is a must in case of emergency; though I do suggest turning it off or silencing calls so your time is just for you! If you need to talk on the phone, pull over on the side of the road to do so - talking and driving simply is not safe, especially on roads or in areas you are not familiar with. |

How I did it: One night me and a friend got it into our heads that we should just fill up the tank and go. So, we did. I think a friend of mine and I are going to do this over the holiday break. We are making plans… sounds like we’re going to head over to the Olympic Peninsula somewhere or maybe the ocean. We’ll find out where we are going when we get there :)

My cousin got his driver’s license so we decided to just take his car and hit the road… it was pretty great even though we hadn’t gotten that far away (we did manage to get lost though :). There was some great music and conversation and that unique feeling of carelessness and freedom. Lots of smiles, and we’ve decided to do it again every once in a while… :)
