Not doing well on this goal anymore. I just don’t feel as safe riding around Melbourne, especially when it’s dark. Drivers just aren’t as aware of bikes on the road, even when the bikes have their own lane. I always see cars driving in these lanes, pedestrians stepping out in front of bikes, etc etc. I also don’t live as close to uni or work anymore, so it is quite a ride to go anywhere.

Rode 80km around Isle of Skye the other day which was fantastic. Such beautiful scenary, but all the hills were a big challenge. Probably wasn’t in shape for such a hard ride.
Since I have been living in Lund this year, I have been in a car very few times. A few friends, a few taxis, but that is it. I have become completely dependant on my bike, and occasionally the bus. Although I miss my car sometimes, when I go home I would like to start riding around Melbourne more often. Save money on petrol, get fit and take a car off the road – all worthy causes. There are a few things that make this slightly difficult. Firstly, Melbourne is a city of approx 3.5mil and Lund is a town of 100K. Secondly, Melbourne is not well set up for people with bikes. You are often forced into riding on the roads and the cars tend not to be very considerate. However, if I move out with my boyfriend and am living close to work and uni, I think this will be very possible. For those times when I still do need a car, I can borrow his.
