It’s not 100% OFFICIAL yet, but it looks like I got an A in Elementary Arabic.

More "How I Did It" stories
How I did it: I took a class ...but gave up because it was soo hard. The following year I re-took the same class but this time I studied the alphabets for a few months before the class began. I tried to attend every class. I didn't understand everything that was taught in class but never gave up. I kept trying and managed to pass my final at the end of the quarter. Now I'm in the level 2 class and can read alhamdullilah!!!… Read how I did it…

After reading the first two volumes of “arabic tutor” and “Arabic Verbs and Essentials of Grammar 2nd Ed”, I feel I have covered the fundamentals of grammar. Now its time to put the rules to practice. For this purpose, I have started doing the syntax analysis of Quranic Ayats.
Today I came across an awesome site that lists the roots in Quran. We can type in the Sura number and Aya number and it shows all the roots involved. I am so relieved to find it : http://www.studyquran.co.uk/PRLonline.htm

Been living in an Arab country almost 3 years now. It’s about time…

Starting the 8th July, I’m taking a 10 (?) week course on beginners conversational Arabic. I’m excited! There isn’t any pressure, or deadlines, it’s just as fast (or more likely; how slow) the class learns collectively.
After spending 5 months in Egypt, I can say that I’ve gone from 10% to 70% in proficiency! I was learning all by ear. My goal by the end of this year is to be able to speak with complete fluency.
Wish me luck!
Ziva_David Fighting like HELL to get through all this a stronger person.
I know this will be difficult for me but I know I’m up for it. But it will probably take a while.
Any advice or tips would be very helpful, thanks.
I’m currently working through the Teach Yourself Beginner’s Arabic Script book and have now learnt the following letters:
ا
آ
ب
ت
ث
ق
ي
It’s strange not having the vowels written, but I’m sure I’ll get used to this. It’s not that it’s impossible to work out what the words say, but it does involve some guesswork.
I’ve almost completed Chapter 1, so on with Chapter 2 tomorrow…
It starts at the end of this month. I’m excited/nervous. I’m waiting for Borders to send me another coupon so I can combine it with a gift card and get my textbook. Wheeeeee.

Okay, so when I first got the software I was practicing daily, but after a week or two stopped. I have a tendency to do this a lot. When I get into something I’ll obsess over it for a week or two and then burn myself out on it. I’ve started using it again, and this time I’m gonna try and pace myself. I figure an hour or so every couple of days should be a good start, and I figure the better I get at it the more frequently I can practice, that way I won’t burn out. I also want to get a couple of kids books in arabic and maybe a movie or two with english subtitles. Hopefully that’ll help some too.
