I first read Garcia Marquez in college, and found “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to be an unenjoyable challenge. The release of the movie version of “Love in the Time of Cholera” has piqued my interest though, so I am going to give him another try (that, and the feeling that I need to do my best to be familiar with one of the great authors of the century). This goes along with my desire to speak & read the spanish language, and my interest in (literary) magical realism, and my desire to visit South America. Garcia Marques is the favorite author (and a distant relative) of a person very special to me, so I also have the motivation to share the experience with him. No real obstacles to this goal unless I find that I just don’t get into the writing. The story appeals to me though for literary and romantic reasons, so I have a feeling I’ll get swept up in it. I’m going to the bookstore after work to pick up a copy. I just hope I can find the earlier release of the book (pictured above) rather than the one issued in conjunction with the movie; I like that cover better!
