I went through the process of becoming a Chartered Engineer from the bottom up. I started with apprenticeship with City & Guilds, then went on to National and Higher National Certificate (HNC) which allowed me to gain Incorporated Engineer (I.Eng.) status. After several years working I decided to go to university to study for a B.Eng.(Honours) that was approved by the IEE and Institute of Measurement and Control. Upon successful completion of this degree plus a year or two experience as a graduate engineer I managed to gain Chartered Engineer status via the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE). I have no regrets and would recommend becoming a Chartered Engineer. This qualification is regarded as a minimum requirement by many engineering design companies and acts as a benchmark for capability and experience. My advice is to follow the requirements carefully and look out for changes as there have been recent amendments that have raised the bar to becoming chartered. In a few years time there will be a shortage of C.Eng. personnel.
