Fundamentals of figure drawing and fundamentals of drawing, by Barrington Barber.
Let me tell you, my drawing has improved! The art class I took wasn’t really what I hoped it would be and I ended up dropping out, but these books have really helped me grasp the mechanics of drawing (anatomy and other such basic knowledge that you might think is boring, but is actually really essential). I hope I continue to improve even more! :D

I started an art class next month, so consider that my first serious step towards reaching this goal! I’ve been practicing a lot more because of the class, and I even carry a sketch book with me now :)

today we had portraits in the class for the second time. I did sooo much better than the previous time. I love having a teacher. She is very good at explaining things. I also finally figured out that it really works better when you have the proportions first. She said: fisr go by intuition, then correct the proportions, then the details. It’s beginning to feel more natural now. I like it. next week is the last class. But then there will be a whole new course starting in September with the same teacher. I am joining!

drawing class
went to a drawing class yesterday…with an instructor…boy was that FUN! I enjoyed it so much, there was a beautiful model and I felt so much at peace and there was beauty all around and I was creating those beautiful images…wow…and I learned so much, jsut for one hour, I learned the most basic thing: that you should first make a general delienation, not too much detail, so you get the proportions right and that way it’s easier to correct if needed. It seemed weird in the beginning but only because I was doing it defferently before, then of course it made sense and I think that’s making it much easier – before I used start at one part with full detail and hard lines and move on and then it was a nightmare fixing the thing when the proportions messed up…when you do the rough proportions first and then the detail it is soooo much easier to focus on getting the shape and the detail right…CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT CLASS!!!

I love drawing and I really want to improve. I can see I already have slightly but I want to get even better. Hopefully once my SATs are all over I can work on this goal a bit more. =]

I’ve been drawing for quite a while now…maybe 5 years at this point. I’m not improving at the level I feel I should. I’ve made myself a goal of getting a fighter onto this website: www.entervoid.com by the end of the summer. I’m never happy with my drawings….and when I am, people fill me with critique until I’m not happy with it again. Here’s my deviantart account if any of you are interested in taking a look: http://pumpkinking14.deviantart.com
There’s self portraits on there, but they’re made from observation and photo refs. I’ve moved past tracing, but I still can’t draw from my head. I’ve heard things like drawing with your arm and starting with the torso. Any advice for someone struggling to improve?

Well the course is finished and I can’t see me taking any more art courses because I’ve taken all that are offered around here so I’ve improved about as much as I’m going to. =)
