For those of you who are unfamiliar with Number Sense:
Number Sense is a 10 minute, 80 question MENTAL MATH test. You must write in pen, and any stray markings are not allowed, no erasures either. For each correct answer you recieve 5 points, for each incorrect, you lose 4. So the range of scores are -320-400. 400 being EXTREMELY RARE, but it has been done, I have seen it! A respectable score to place at the STATE meet, would be 250+.
The questions? You are probably thinking something like questions ranging from 124 + 142 to 15×80. NO SIR/MA’AM! The questions, to the untrained eye appear much harder than that. Questions range from 11×305 to ADVANCED Calculus.
But when you practice number sense, you look for patterns, shortcuts, and the easy-way-out. Anyone unfamiliar with number sense may sit and try to figure out 11×305, but knowing a short cut is much easier! What is the shortcut? Well, first you write down the units digit, then from right to left you add two digits at a time and write that down, carrying if necessary, then you write the last digit.
11×305 =
1) write down 5
2) add 5 +0 = 5 write down 5
3) add 3 +0 = 3 write down 3
4) write down 3
answer: 3355

We have been practicing all summer long!!!! From the end of May until the beginning of August. But we won’t stop there! Our scores have increased DRAMATICALLY!!!!
At the beggining of the summer, I averaged maybe a score of 70.
2 months later I average well into the high 100s, probably around 180 to be exact. I have made 5 200+ scores, and that number will only go up!
Just imagine at this rate of increase, how good will I be doing by 2007 District? (March)
