How I did it: So everyone pretty much knows the basics of poker but I wanted to understand the cards and all the crap. I started playing on my phone a version of poker and that got me into the basics. Next, I found a game called Governor of Poker (search it on google, it's on many sites if you'd like to try). It's a fun interactive game that is awesome to learn poker from. What's great about it is that you get to play against smart computers whic… Read how I did it…

What’s a good free website to learn? Don’t want to play with real money yet.
Came across PokerStars.com and I’m a bit apprehensive…. I think I have to fund the account with real money.
But I want to learn and practice for free …..and THEN decide if I want to do it for real.
What’s some good sites?

My Husband, Uncle and Dad taught me how to play Texas Holdem. I never actually thought I would be able to get the hang of it, but they were all excellent teachers and whilst I don’t feel confident enough to go and bet real money, it was a fun way to waste a few hours last night :)

So by fluke the other day, my grandma left her tv on poker. And of course, me being as lazy as I am kept it on the channel. I didn’t learn a whole lot more then I already know but I’m really starting to get the hang of the game.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I know how to play, but I want to be able to memorize what hands beat what and that kind of stuff. I have a poker game on my phone so maybe that will help me out a bit. This goal will be getting crossed off VERY shortly.
Dooffodil Life is a shoebox of dooffodils and doosies
I know the basics of the game and am familiar with the various poker hands. This means I’m able to play without having to constantly glance at my notes.
An aspect of the game I still need to develop on is the betting strategy. There were times when I tried to bluff all the way and ended up losing almost all of my pot. I suppose it’s a skill which comes with experience.
So, beginner’s poker nights, anyone?
After sharing with a couple of girlfriends about my goal to learn how to play poker (I have not been much of a card player in my life), they revealed that they had the desire to work on their game skills as well. Thus, we put together a “Girl’s Night” poker game which occured last night.
Being women of culinary pleasures, we ate homemade “healthy” pizza, an amazing Caesar Salad, and had Strawberries/whipped cream for dessert prior to getting started with the cards.
The game chosen was Texas Hold Em, and we laughed hard as they taught me some of the basic poker information. We played for chips this time, but agreed to have a $10 buy in next time…planned for another Tuesday night two weeks from now.
Of course, with Beginner’s Luck, I cleaned up on the game. Win or not, it was an absolutely brilliant evening spent with friends. A fun and non-stressful way to learn something new!
