I guess I’m getting ever better, although I don’t have much time for practice and learning of new tunes :/ I’m pretty happy with how I can do ornaments and such, but I need to learn ti vary a tune more. Hmmm. And I need to learn many, many new tunes.

Regan from Flogging Molly really got me goin on the whistle, I loved the sound for years, just never thought about breaking away from guitar until awhile ago. I learned a few simple tunes (amazing grace, auld lang syne, et cetera) and never really screwed with it alot until lately. Now i can play most tunes by ear and love to just go sit by the lake and play, esp those early morning sunrises at the beach… very nice moments.
I play a Clarke in D and will be expanding my collection shortly.

Tin Whistle? 16 months ago

Our hetitage is very important and can define our culture as a result sometimes it is healthy to step away from western trends and discover real music,

Sights set on St. Patricks Day Session! 22 months ago

A warm hello to all fellow tin whistle enthusiasts! I recently bought my self a tin whistle as an impulse buy, it was cheap and I’d been thinking of learning some kind of recorder type instrument for a while, namely to play irish and scottish folk and medieval music too. My background is in classical piano, I wanted an instrument that I could carry around ! an instrument I could jam with, an instrument that lends its self to celtic music….

It’s easy to learn, but not easy to master.
Thankyou for all those links ira pacifist!! I will certainly be using them.

you see, I’m going away for St. Patricks day with a friends irish family to their holiday house, his parents are in an irish band and the play at the local pub and then everyone comes back to the house and has a big session. It’s my goal to get some tradional tunes down pat so I can join in on all the fun!

Once I have them down pat, I think I’ll then practise after a few pints of guiness so I’m prepared for the real thing :D

I also have a link to share, pacifist mentioned not being good at the whole music theory side of things and changing keys..
so if you’re in the same boat this will be helpful.
The author talks about modes that are common in irish traditional music too, and has fingering charts that are really easy to follow. It names irish tunes and reels and jigs and what key/mode they are usually found in! I found it very helpful.

This is why I love the internet! :) goodluck with all your whistle endevours! hope to hear from you all soon.

regards,
Charlie Jean

Still haven’t tried anything faster, but I’ve learned Loch Lomond and am working on Raglan Road.
