Being raised Jewish, as a child I always used to be jealous of those who got to celebrate Christmas. But now that I’m grown up and married, and celebrate with my in-laws, I don’t really like it that much. I don’t intend to reflect badly on my in-laws, I just find the whole Christmas thing in general to be so overwhelming. The idea of so many celebrations crammed into such a short period of time is stressful rather than joyous. So much stock is put into having large, fatty meals, when I much prefer frequent, small, healthful meals. I feel so decadent opening multitudes of gifts all at once on Christmas morning. I don’t get a chance to truly appreciate the gift before it’s time to open another one. It doesn’t help that Christmas in America has been so commercialized, and that quantity is often prized over quality. 5 years ago

cranberrygoddessI have done it every year for 26 years

i.e. my whole life, despite the fact that I’m atheist. I see it as a kind of midsummer feast (I’ve never had christmas in the northern hemisphere but I had one in brazil).

Usually we spend it other families that we are friends with, although once I spent it at my great aunt’s place in Tasmania. We would talk and talk and there are so many memories, and such great food. 5 years ago
