How I did it: I got the Michel Thomas cds - the man is a genius. Within an hour I was putting together French sentences that I never thought probable! 

Lessons & tips:

Beg, steal or borrow (or buy!) Michel Thomas's cds. And you might need a pocket dictionary for spelling.
