How to host a foreign exchange student

 "I had several students live with us over a few years, from Japan, Korea and China. It was fun and we miss them now"
How I did it: I contacted an agency who matches forgein language students with familes. They generally did not want to live with pets but all loved our cat when they settled in. We had mostly girls, I found they boys were distruptive to our household, and all smoked heavily despite telling the agent they didn't. Lessons & tips: The agency was a great help. Be very clear about what you don't want in your home as it is that first; because I had children I was very strict about no boyfriends or smokers. Also the telephone use needs to be explained, although the pre-paid cards are good, one girl misunderstood the procedures leavinga $170 phone bill after 2 weeks, luckliy she sent me a cheque. |

I have never done this before.But i talk to my daughter and she said she would love to do something like this.We just bought a new house .So if we pick you yall both can get to know the communtity.She will be starting a new school called Northern middle.She is in the eighth grade.If you come you will be attending Nothern highschool are Nothern middle the schools are next to each other. I would like to do this before my sons finish high school. I remember the exchange students at my school when I was still in High School, and I think it would be beneficial for my sons as well.

My German exchange “sister” just left today and it was so sad. We had such a great time and we were really close. I made a great new friend and I learned some more German as well. I learned a lot about Germany and the culture there. We were kind of different in style, but we had the same sense of humor and got along very well. I will visit her sometime in the next year. I really recommend others doing this.

I’m pretty close to achieving this goal. It started with a meeting offered at school. They handed out fliers and applications, and also made me very interested in the AFS program. So I went to another, outside school, meeting. They gave a lot more information here and also opened the option for hosting. I found this to be a better option for me. I want to host maybe next year (high school junior year) and then once I graduate and go to college, then I will become an exchange student. I just don’t feel that I can give up all of my Honors and AP classes for a year, they are crucial to get into my ideal colleges. But hosting is a good option for me. There is another meeting coming up where I’ll probably apply to be a host. wish me luck!

I stayed in France for a month last year and had a great experience with my host family. Someday I’d like to return the favor in a way by hosting a student of my own.
