HAaaarrr! We had a great time with this. My plan did come together and things turned out really well.

To start, I wrote out a bunch of little clues, that led to other clues (the Easter bunny did this for us kids to hunt down Easter baskets a couple years running). An example would be something like: “You sometimes make this in the morning.” In this case that meant coffee and the coffee maker. The next clue would be somewhere in/around the coffee maker and lead someplace else. Amazing how entertaining little clues on paper can be.

After 12 clues the birthday girl had in hand: one new GPS receiver and a treasure map!

I took an easy geocache from geocaching.com that was pretty close to my apartment and put its information in “pirate treasure map form”.

I built in a little riddle to the map as well and used some invisible ink (lemon juice) to obscure the true cache coordinates. The picture kind of shows the effect. I remember doing this as a kid as well and it makes for a bit of sloppy writing but the results were adequate here. Looking at the map picture (upper right coordinates) You can see what would have read as “N 31 21.631” ... by using some heat to bring out the missing strokes … now reads “N37 21.834”. WOOooooh! Tricky! (laugh)

I also modified the names of streets to obscure them a bit more and make them more pirate-y.

Using the GPS, coordinates, and map clues we went treasure hunting/geocaching. This made for a darn entertaining couple of hours. We did succeed in finding the cache and subsequently may go off doing more geocaching this weekend. 4 years ago

... I’ll see if I can pull this off for someone’s upcoming b-day. If I manage it it should be excellent. Targeting weekend after next to make this come together.

i’m trying to decide who to give this to =)

i think it will be easier to pick the treasure, and location, if i know who is getting the map. 5 years ago
