camp

I have to work Friday and Saturday…so, no camping for me. I guess it’s time to move this goal into a longer-term category and forget it until at least spring.

There’s a problem at the campsite and a bunch of other problems I don’t have time to get into.

Hopefully my friend will be staying in the state long enough that we can get this resolved and do it next week, maybe.

A friend’s coming out to my state next week; he’s visiting for other reasons first, but the second week he’ll be closer to me so we’ll head to a campsite near the volcanic area for a couple of nights. :)

I just wonder if any of the talk is gonna turn into action this season!

Now I just have to wait a few weeks and see who’ll be first to finish idly flapping their lips and start making real plans about going with me.

I have a tent and a sleeping bag and a location in mind. As far as I know I lack two things now:

1) a camping pad

2) someone who knows what they’re doing sleeping outdoors

I wrote the local military surplus place an email and asked if they have any camping pads in stock right now; I would just go but it’s pretty far from me; too far if I’m not sure I’m going to get what I wanted. And I have two outdoorsy friends who have expressed a willingness to share my maiden voyage into the great outdoors; one is thinking September might be a good time for it, the other one is planning on visiting my state in October and said that if the other friend isn’t coming through for me for whatever reason he’d be interested in going.

Well, I camped a lot when I was younger but not since having 2 kids. So, with partner and kids in tow, I went camping for 3 nights. One hour either side of getting to the camp site, partner lost wallet and broke main tent pole, so we got off to a wobbly start. Still, the tent was up by dark and the temporary repair to the pole held. The wallet was retrieved, but not until after the police cancelled the cards…so no money for another week…hmm one goal leads to another…budgetting in earnest. On balance it was worth it. It was beautiful in the mountains, and really refreshing to focus on the here and now of immediate needs…the next meal, sleep, warmth. A big bold possum ate our bread, last bananas and marshmallows, but not until the last night, so we were happy to share. A black snake crossed my path when I was walking in the bush alone and that was psychologically challenging, and put me on edge for a while. I’m not planning our next adventure just yet, but there will be one!

My husband and I try to camp 2 times a month. It is absolutely vital to our psyche to destress and hit the “reset” button on our brains.

We pack the car Thursday night and leave right after work on Friday. Camp Friday and Saturday night, and drive home Sunday morning. We found this to work really well and we’ve been camping 11 times since February 2007 and it’s now mid August. We have another trip planned this weekend.

We hit the local spots within 2 – 3 hours driving. We took a longer trip and went to Sequoia and Kings Canyon as well.

There’s nothing better than sleeping outdoors, walking among the trees, building your campfire and just relaxing.
