gone wireless! 2 years ago

I’ve been wanting to set up a wireless network at home for a long while, and I just recently realized that my existing router actually provides wireless access already! And surprisingly, it’s turned on by default… so my neighbors could’ve been getting free network access all this time.

So, my router (like most) has a “web interface,” which simply means that I can go to a web page running on the router itself, to change it’s configuration. I used that to make it so that only my laptop can access this network locally (termed “MAC address filtering”).

The next step was to secure the traffic, because anyone in the near vicinity could easily spy on my network traffic over the air. Here is a wikipedia entry with a great summary on wireless security. It looks like none of the security options are totally uncrackable, but I don’t plan on doing banking or anything sensitive over this connection. I wound up going with WPA Personal (WPA-PSK), which has you specify a password in the router settings, and again on the computer you are using to connect to it.

It is pretty awesome to be able to sit anywhere in the house and be able to surf or catch-up on email. I can check any game score on my laptop, while I’m sitting there watching football. And soon, I will be playing Halo 3 on Xbox Live… and won’t have to string cable throughout the house to do it.

The beauty of being able to IM your loved one in his office at the top of the house is indescribable…!

It saves a whole heap of hassle with wires etc, plus if you’re a student (like moi) loads of computers in a house can be linked at the same time through one router – genius!

You can surf the web in bed, whilst cooking dinner, even (for hardcorists) on the loo.

If you get the chance, do it!

sooo worth it! 2 years ago

i rarely sit at the desk and use my desktop anymore—it’s all about using the laptop now!

especially worth it with a laptop! lay in bed, surf the web, print things out in a different room, stream music from itunes. fabulous!

There’s nothing like using my laptop in any room if I want to just because I can.

Actually, the home wireless network was so I don’t have to be tied down to my desk in order to do my online classwork.

Plus for some reason, my husband thinks the computers need to “talk” to each other. Maybe so they won’t be lonely :)

nothing better than sitting on the couch on 43things and watching tivo. :-)

Honestly, my husband did this one! It is really a fantastic resource to have at our disposal, and if you have the means, I would highly recommend it.

Pretty cool, but... 3 years ago

...not 100% reliable. Guess I add “research WHY my wireless network periodically fails” to my list of things.
