I took 2 years of French in High School, but like most people. I lost it all as a grown up. Well not all. I can say few phrases. I have an awesome accent. But thats as far as it goes. If I want to travel to France I want to make sure I can speak to the inhabitants. LOL
By the end of 2008 i would like to improve my french skills so much that i am able to live comfprtably in paris on my own
Bought every book, taken classes in America, tough to learn when you go to France and they also speak English. I know it is the practice that does the trick. Just need the time and motivation to achieve this long term goal.
So this overlaps the “learn a bunch of languages” but then i figured it was time to be a bit, um, more unnebulous. Basically if I’m to go back for the PhD next Fall (i.e. fall of ‘09) I need to know French & German (because so much academic work is written in these languages), Latin, and I’d like to have at least a reading knowledge of Arabic.
French is a good one to start because I used to take it and so have at least a start. It also segues nicely into Latin (which I’d started but then stopped : ( because, well, its a Romance language and all.
Hopefully one day soon i’ll be able to speak French fluently and not be shy about messing up while doing it .
I’ve been studying French for a few years now, and I’m rather good at it. I’d like to be fluent though!
I agree, listening to french (and practicing speaking!) are vital to learn… I have started downloading a learn french podcast and listening to it everyday during my walk on my ipod. There are a few different ones (different levels, styles) and I think it is really helping me remember verbs, etc. Writing endless lists of vocab and conjugation really isn’t my thing (tho it is necessary for some aspects)
bonne chance!
Worth doing!
I spent the entire of last year in a french school and now I can speak fluently! Being in the country and absorbing language all day and every day is definitely the best way to learn! It took me five months to become fluent- before that I had learnt five years of high-school french. It still amazes me when I can understand this whole jumble of english words, and that i can communicate fully with people in another language! definitely worth it!!!!!!!
