I suspect that you have to be fit enough to run 9 to 12 miles at a good pace.

I climbed with a full backpack to the base camp at Helen Lake at approximately 10000 feet, and attempted to summit the next day. Our team started out at 3 am in poor visibility conditions, and at 8 am had only reached an altitude of 11300 feet. I wasn’t able to go on and the team had to turn back.
the first time i attempted shasta we prepared well – but were surprised by a storm that blew in overnight while camping at 10k. we left anyway in the morning @ 3am – snow in august! – and because of visablity problems went left of ‘the heart’ and missed the best route to the red banks and on to the top. none of us regretted turning back that day – it got hairy real fast. I returned two years later with a different group – this time made the proper route in better physical condition – and summited relatively easily. I’m a cal native and this is our mountain – an amazing slice of nature – I’m so proud to have gone back – and to see it from above when I fly up to seattle. yea – -
I tried to Climb Shasta once before, but was misinformed about the best route. Plus, I had never tried anything like it before and was not adequately prepared. I just drove up there and started hiking, by myself I might add. I concluded this is something best done with at least one other person after a small avalanche sent a basket ball sized boulder bouncing past me at 60 miles per hour
