It Comes With a Smile 2 years ago

One thing is people smile alot. I have learned some words…Simple commands and nouns. Ya(n)dra means hello in the morning, Bula means Hello in the afternoon, Vinaka means thankyou, Bula vinaka means thank you very much, moce means goodby(pronounced mo-they), vudi is plantain (pronounced vundee), voi voi the large plant to weave the mats. My Fijian friends say it is an easy language to learn…easier the English is for them. Certain letters are pronounced with a combination N+ sound like Nadi is pronounced Nan-dee, d=nd, or Bagasau is pronounced Ban-ga-sow. And the letter c is pronounce th. It is interesting to also follow the changes for words from island to island…for example dalo is the same as taro in hawaiian. And if you ask someone “Do you want some more ….” and they say “Vinaka”...it may mean No Thankyou.
We had a good laugh about that one.
