Easy way to list extensions for this task 3 years ago

Get the InfoLister extension. You can easily configure it so that it outputs the correct format codes for 43things.com (use the text file output).

    Here’s an example configuration:

    * name% - description

    .
And here are the first five entries of the list that was generated from it:

    • Adblock Plus – Filters ads from web-pages. Now with whitelisting and synchronization.
    • Allow Right-Click – Defeats web sites’ right-click prevention scripts.
    • Amazon Button – Amazon Access Button
    • BBCode – Adds Formating (BBCode/HTML/XHTML/etc.) to the context menu for Blogs and forums like Mozillazine (PHPBB and others).
    • ChromEdit – A Simple User Profile File Editor

    Additional Extensions 4 years ago

In the 5 weeks since I first posted, I went to The Extensions Mirror and viewed every extension on their exhaustive list. Here are the ones I’ve added (most of which just make Firefox a little more user-friendly):

    • BBcode – Provides a nice set of tools for those who post regularly on phpBB message boards (or other sites that use BBCODE).
    • Devboi – Provides a sidebar with reference information for HTML, CSS, XUL, and DOM 2. A good tool for web and Mozilla developers.
    • Download Statusbar – A replacement for the download manager. Displays the downloads, with a progress bar, at the bottom of the Firefox window.
    • EMButtons – Creates two toolbar buttons, one for the extension manager and one for the themes manager. Also has options to sort the EM/TM lists and there is a concise mode for the EM.
    • Findbar Basics – Some minor enhancements to the functionality of the find toolbar.
    • IE View – Allows you to view a page in Internet Explorer. Includes the ability to specify certain sites that will alway open in IE. Useful for those sites that just don’t quite work right in Firefox.
    • Nuke Anything – Remove an item from the web page. Useful for cleaning up a page prior to printing.
    • Open in this Window – Adds a context menu item to open a link in the current window, when it would normally open in a new one.
    • Resizeable Textarea – Allows you to resize textarea. Especially useful for those sites where the textarea is tiny and you can’t see what you’ve written.
    • Uppity – Adds a toolbar button that will move up one level in the current directory hierarchy of the web page. On the same note, there is the ‘top’ bookmarklet that will go to the high-level web site.

    Extensions 4 years ago

I am an extension junkie—couldn’t live without them. Here are my top 5 favorites, in order:

    • Tab Mix – An essential collection of popular tab browser functionality. If you want the super-duper-everything-you-could-ever-think-of extension, try Tabbrowser Extensions instead.
    • Menu Editor – Customizes menus. If you do not have this, get it. It allows you to reorder the context menu, as well as removing unwanted entries.
    • Habari XenuA RSS/Atom news reader. I use this every day.
    • ChromEdit – One of the most useful extensions I have. Allows direct editing of the user.js, userChrome.css, and userContent.css files. If you’ve ever tried to find the profile directory, you understand what I’m talking about.
    • OpenBook – Updates Firefox’s crappy “Add Bookmark” function to something that is actually useful.

Here are the remainder of my extensions, in alphabetical order:

    • Adblock – Blocks web advertisements, and also can block flash objects. If you don’t have this installed, get it.
    • Allow Right-Click – Enables right-clicking on many web pages that disable it.
    • Amazon Access Menu – Adds a toolbar button that gives direct access to a host of amazon.com functions. Useful if you use amazon a lot. There is also a separate extension that adds the same functionality to the context menu.
    • Context Search – Changes the “Web Search for” context item into a menu containing your search plugins. This extension is so useful that I’m surprised it isn’t part of Firefox proper.
    • Copy Url Plus – Allows you to copy the current page’s URL, title, selection, etc. with additional formatting information. I use this quite often.
    • CuteMenus – Adds icons to your menus/popups. Totally useless, but it changes the look and feel of Firefox.
    • Disable Targets for Download – Disables that annoying property of Firefox where it opens a blank window for a download with a target.
    • Flashblock – Replaces Flash/Shockwave objects with a button you can click to view them. Really useful if the flash object has unwanted sound or if you have a dial-up connection.
    • FoxyTunes – Adds music player controls to the status bar at the bottom of the browser. Supports a variety of players and keeps you from having to switch out of the browser to control the music.
    • Gcache – Brings up a view of the current page (or link) in the Google cache. Useful if the page is currently unavailable for some reason.
    • lget – Adds a menu item allowing the direct download of a link. There have been times in the past where I had to create a web page with the link I wanted to download, so I could right-click on it and download the file. This extension does away with the need for that.
    • Link Visitor – Marks a link as visited or unvisited. I use it with my RSS reader to keep track of which links I’ve already seen.
    • Mouse Gestures – Allows you to use the mouse to perform browser actions. I’ve had some problems with it, because it tends to ignore gestures when the browser is busy.
    • Paste and Go – Adds a ‘paste and go’ function to the address bar, so you don’t have to paste and then click the ‘go’ button.
    • Plain Text Links – Treats plain text as a URL that can be opened in the current or a new tab. Useful for those times when people can’t or don’t know how to create a clickable link.
    • Target Alert – Adds a small icon to the end of a link for certain document types. Useful for knowing what the link actually points to.
    • User Agent Switcher – Allows customization of the browser’s User Agent string, so you can get past those web sites that require a specific browser type.
    • View Cookies – Adds a tab to the Page Info dialog box, which shows the cookies of the current webpage. This is interesing for developers, privacy-concious users and others.
    • View Formatted Source – A much, much better ‘view page source’ function. The only caveat is that view formatted source gives the page source after the page has been re-formatted by other extensions.
    • Web Developer – If you are a web developer, this extension is indispensable.

    Firefox Extenstions! 4 years ago

I am addicted to Firefox extensions. I would like to share them with others. Plus, next time I do some bone-headed move on Firefox which manages to mangle everything, including extensions, I would have yet another way to quickly retrieve which ones I particularly like.

How about using Flickr for this? 4 years ago

    Check it out here.

How about descriptions? 4 years ago

    Hey Scott,
Great idea, but how about some descriptions with your lists? I would love to know a little more about what they do before I click through. Would you mind?

Also, check out some of the extensions I use over at my site. I wrote this post specifically about extensions and this one generally about Firefox with links and descriptions for a few basic extensions.

Thanks again for starting this goal, should be fun.
