How I did it: I was almost bullied into purchasing a plant for charity a year ago last week. Hark! The serendipity of it! Turns out Hoya hybrids are a kind of cactus which means she only needs to be watered quarterly and prefers full sun. I find it hard to provide her with full sun in the tundra here, but alas, we both muddle through ok with the help of indoor tanning. Read how I did it…

I feel like I’m getting the hang of this. I have killed numerous plants over the course of my life time. But, I have found my niche! Cactii. I have a Christmas Cactus at work that is doing fantastically and I have an aloe plant at home that is a sturdy little thing.
This summer I have tried petunias in some pots on the north side of my home. I planted them by hand instead of just buying them already in decorative pots. So far, I’ve been successful at keeping them for about four weeks.

i’ve had a worm bin in my kitchen for six months now. makes composting easier in cold climates, stuff breaks down faster and honestly, surprising doesn’t smell at all. if you stick your nose in and sniff, you just smell a good healthly earthy dirt smell :)
I’m on the hunt right now for a compost bin of some sort. They’re realatively cheap while it’s cold out. Hopefully I can pick one up with my tax refund. I’ve been researching all of the necessary things for good compost and feel like I can easily produce some to help fertalize my yard.
I’m also looking into what it would take to start planting things indoors in pots to later transfer outside. There aren’t a lot of websites that reference plants for my climate region or things that are native to Kansas. So, it’s taking a little more research than I originally hoped. Plus, my local garden shops aren’t as helpful as I’d like.
I’m kicking myself for not planting a bunch of bulbs this past Fall. However, I didn’t have the money at the time. Priorities, right?

i have been a deadbeat plant momma of late…hope i can still save my babies..they are hungry. I am much happier when tending to , rather than ignoring them.
So some of the herbs have died, but the huge basil pot is doing great. Where can I get good organic potting soil here? I want to go someplace besides Home Depot.
I can’t wait to set up pots and pots of herbs on our front balcony. Every time I buy fresh basil I get annoyed, because it’s so great growing it. My last apartment wouldn’t work for growing things, though, so it’s been a while for me. After mastering herbs first, maybe I can move on to veggies. Is there enough room out there?

i used to kill everything. It wasnt until i realized that just because your plant is yellow doesnt mean it wants water. Sometimes its telling you that your drowning it as a matter of fact. I’ve finally gotten to the point where i can read a plant. :) they talk to you just in thier own way.
