I did this with Russian a while back. I just learnt the alphabet really, and a couple of words, and I can’t even remember them all but I still consider it a worthwhile achievement for the short amount of time I invested in it. I want to learn a little bit about every, or at least most, languages in the world. Except I recall that there are something like 120+ official languages in Africa, so maybe I’ll stick to a few of the more widely used African languages…
At a future date, I shall create a list of the languages I will dabble in, and gain much satisfaction from the gradual elimination of each different tongue.
This is a good goal for me – I find it difficult to master anything because I never maintain an interest in any subject beyond a basic level. Therefore, by learning only a little bit, I can satiate my thirst for knowledge before my interest buggers off somewhere and refuses to come back.
Update: Stuff the list, there’s far too many languages. Actually, maybe that was a bit rash. I’ll just list the languages I’ve done so far, and add to the list as I progress. Also, if I find any brilliant resources I will link to them, should anyone else be interested:
English (obviously)
French
Russian (excellent resource)
I was going to use bullet points, but it said my HTML was malformed and wouldn’t let me save it. My HTML, for the record, was not malformed.
