    Worth doing!

omg it was the coolest thing ever!
it was a rather cloudy day, but through a break in the clouds, i saw the moon, haloed by a moonbow!
it was like a rainbow but with dark intense colours
deffinately one of the coolest things i have ever seen
i wish on you all to see a moonbow with your very own eyes atleast once before you die

I have been to Cumberland Falls COUNTLESS times...  — 8 months ago

Ive been there COUNTLESS times.. as recently as Oct. of this year… and have NEVER been there at the right time to see the moonbow…. I have no idea why.. I just never think of it till someone brings it up… I am making a goal for this year to PURPOSEFULLY make the trip (its only 3 hours from here) JUST TO SEE THE MOONBOW..

I saw it years ago  — 1 year ago

    Worth doing!

I saw the moonbow at Cumberland Falls, KY years ago when I was like 14. I was reminded of it in a conversation with my mom, and I had to google it to remember the location, but I had the state right. We were on a camping trip through Tennessee & Kentucky, and were in the right area at the right time of the month to stay and see it.
They say that you can hardly see the colors with the naked eye, but it was a clear night, with good water flow, and I could see it well with my young eyes. You had to sit in the dark for 10 or more minutes to let your eyes adjust enough to see it though.
Unfortunately, my cheap instamatic type camera back then couldn’t capture a photo, even though it had a time lapse setting I didn’t have a tripod so tried to hold it steady on a rock for 10, 20 and 30 second exposures I got nothing more than a ghostly blur.
I may take my son there someday, and use my programmable digital camera with a tripod to get pictures.

The one I saw was awe inspiring!  — 1 year ago

    Worth doing!

It was in Broome Western Australia (A great place to visit By the way)
Foggy night, full moon by the mangroves. Bright, bright colours in the night sky. Shame I didn’t have a camera.

    So close...why haven't I done this yet?  — 1 year ago

I’m fortunate enough to live within a couple of hours of Cumberland Falls, the only site of a predictable moonbow in the entire Western Hemisphere! But I’ve yet to go there at night… only ever visited during the day. I must work on this! Maybe a long weekend at the Falls is in order during my April vacation from work.

    I thought I saw one  — 2 years ago

while walking my dog last night, but it turned out to be a weird break in the clouds in an almost-dark sky…

These seem to be most prominent near waterfalls, which I guess makes sense!

    Must find waterfall…

    Moonbows  — 2 years ago

I once went through Corbin, KY on my way to visit my father in Indiana. There is a place there called Cumberland Falls, which is supposededly the only place in the world besides Australia where one can see a “Moonbow” (As opposed to Rainbow). It is only visable at a few specific times of the year, and then only if weather conditions are right. Something that unique must be worth the trip, especially if you are lucky enough to see it with someone you love.

    Not worth it!

The camping trip was great. The weather was great, the hiking was great, the friends and food were great. Kentucky is beautiful, and the trip as a whole was pretty much perfect.

The moonbow itself, on the other hand… just “ehh”. It was sorta romantic being out at the falls at night. But almost as easy to trick yourself into “seeing” the moonbow as it was to actually see it.
