awful movie. absolutely bloody awful. humour was sacrificed for a contrived plot which bore little or no resemblance to anything that happened in the radio or tv series or the books. the only character trait of ford prefect which remained was his inability to understand sarcasm, which suddenly became the mainstay of his personality, rendering him humourless. and the ending. don’t even TALK to me about the ending. nearly vomited.
the only good things were alan rickman as marvin, stephen fry as the book, and bill bailey as the sperm whale :)
This was a great movie. I can’t see anyone who loved the book, not loving this.
My gf and I enjoyed it, but there are two large groups of folks who wouldn’t like it at all:
- Folks who have never ever been exposed to the HGTTG. These folks should read the book before seeing the movie. Go ahead, it’s a short book, and a very light read.
- Purists who think that they have the One True Vision of the book. These folks need to remember that there were little differences between the radio show, the book, and the tv show. They also need to realize that a lot of changes in the movie were sketched out by Douglas Adams before he died. Basically, they need to either get over themselves or just skip the movie completely.

Worth a look. You don’t need to have read the books, seen the TV, listened to the radio series etc.
Updated for the iPod generation but still there is something timeless about Arthur Dent.
Chris Campbell is getting things done.
I saw the film on the weekend and I enjoyed it. I doubt if any film could live up to expectations… I first listened to “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” via an NPR rebroadcast that I taped onto 8-Track tapes… I think that it was in the late 70s or early 80s that I heard it and it made quite an impression on me. I enjoyed the books and the tv adaptation (low-budget and all) and was looking forward to the film. There wasn’t really anything wrong with it and parts of it are amazing and funny and wonderful, but it was understated and just right. So not incredibly exciting or moving, but a solid adaptation. I think that if there is a sequel it could push the limits a bit. One of the things that I loved about the radio series was that it digressed a lot and that web-like multislacking was some of the appeal… maybe the film was a bit too focussed to be great… I’m wondering if the DVD version of the film will do some cool things.
Not the book. Obviously. But great. In different ways. I missed the snappy dialogue and visually it wasn’t like anything I’d pictured, but I had a good time.
