I was discriminated against at the new donor physical. BioLife said that the FDA won’t allow me to donate just because I’m transgender. They said I have a high risk lifestyle. I’m so mad. I haven’t been with anyone in several years, so wtf? That’s like saying everybody trans is out there selling themselves on the street corner. Screw ‘em. I found out they do the same thing to gays. They are supposed to be testing all the blood anyway, so what the hell?

How I did it: I donated plasma for about 12 months, until I had a reaction to the anti-coagulant and passed out...twice. The nurses also think that I am slightly too small to donate. I will hopefully do it again in the future :) Read how I did it…

I have a new donor physical on Tuesday to see if I am eligible to donate plasma at BioLife Plasma Service. It’s going to be a new experience, and I can use the extra cash right about now. Here’s hoping everything turns out well.

told me about this, I am really interested in doing this. I’ve recently heard of this as well as a few other things. I’ve wanted to be an organ donor for awhile now too. I read of a couple today on my local news station who both donated a kidney & thought it was the most selfless thing anyone can do. She helped save a mothers life! How amazing…I want to be able to do this too.
yay! I found out the hospital within walking distance of my house is the nearest donation center. I’ve never donated before and I’ve read about long waits on the weekends from others who have posted here. Should I get there super early on Saturday?
I was interested in some of the things said on here and thought I would comment. I happen to work for a plasma center.
1. Do not donate plasma when you are not feeling well. It is important for your safety and the safety of the plasma to be healthy when you donate.
2. If you have donated whole blood you can not donate plasma for 56 days because there is a risk of blood cell loss. You can not donate plasma for 7 days after you have donated platelets. I am unsure how it works the other way around. You can donate plasma 2 times in a seven day period with atleast 1 day between the donations which comes to a total of about 104 donations. So you could donate Monday and Wednesday and come back the following Monday and Wednesday.
3. Yes, there is no substitute for human blood, but there is also no substitute for human plasma. Human plasma is used to create drugs for people with immune deficiencies and blood clotting disorders. Without human plasma these people would likely not survive and need plasma treatments about once a week. It takes 16 donors to make one dose of medication. So either way you go, you are helping people.
4. Going to Europe does not always affect your ability to donate plasma. It can depend on how long you were there, which countries you visited and when you went.
All in all donating plasma is completely worth it because it not only helps people but you also get something in return besides just feeling good about it.
Well I’ve always wanted to do this anyways. Plus I could get paid for it which I could use to buy my temps again. So now I just need a ride there…
But I am planning on donating the plasma because I am really low on cash… does anyone know if you can donate if you ave been out of the country… I went to Thailand recently and was wondering if that would affect me donating?
Iamlilly Trying to figure out who I am
So I have been wanting to do this for a while but have never really been very serious about looking into it. I think it would be a great way to help people. I know there are two different places in my town that I can donate. I will look into them this week.

So I went and was there at 7:30 (like they said to be there at) and you know what? The building was filled! I would have been there for about 4 possibly 5 hours. I forgot to bring something to read too. So I left. I’m going to come on a weekday instead of the weekend and I’m going to come at 7:00 instead of 7:30. This time I won’t forget my book either.
After you do the first one they’re all appointments after that so if I stick to the plan I should have it done in a decent amount of time. I’m going to try again in three days. Here’s hoping that there will not be even more people than today.
How soon can you donate whole blood after donating plasma? (48 hours?)
How soon can you donate whole blood after donating platelets? (48 hours?)

I want to donate all three at least once so I’d be nice to know. I’m trying to find the answers on-line but I’m sure that each donation center has different rules on this sort of stuff.
I think you can donate plasma 12 times a year, platelets 24 times a year, and whole blood 5 times a year. That’s strange though because this other site I was at says that you can donate plasma twice a week all year so that’s 104 times. I’m wondering if you donate plasma more that 12 times if the first place that lists that will take anything else from you. It’s all really rather confusing. I don’t think I’d donate all that much but still… I’d like to know.

Went to the plasma center and got some information. I’d have rather donated some plasma but it turns out that new donors have to come in at 7:30am in the morning (not on their website) and that returning donors make appointments (not on their website). So I guess I’ll just have to get up at 5:30am tomorrow morning and go donate some plasma.
I think it needs to be open a lot more than it is. It’s operating hours are short and there are two days a week it’s not open.
The place was packed too – which surprised me. I’m wondering how long I’m going to be waiting tomorrow morning. I’m also starting to wonder if this is worth the hassle. I want to give blood though and since I really can’t spare blood yet I figure that I’ll give the next best thing first.
