Well Im coming up on the end of my fire academy at red rocks. And I will be applying to evergreen again as well as other departments. Lovig everything.
How I did it: First, find out if this is something you REALLY want to do because it won't be easy and you'll never get a job if you jut kind of want to. Depending on your location, take an EMT class at a local community college. During your ride-alongs, talk to the guys you are working with and learn about the pros and cons because there will be both at every department. If you still want to do it, take the minimum standards class for the firefighting side of the job. Then apply and be persistent because it will take some time.Good luck!
Lessons & tips: Always do the absolute best that you can during training, it will pay off.
Ask questions about what you don't know. Face it, you won't know everything and the worst you can do is guess and waste time.

I’ve been thinking about it for a while.
And I’m gonna start looking into it this winter, though I won’t be able to until summer of 2011 at the earliest…when I’m 22, which I think is a good age.
Anyway, I know lots of people from past trail crews who have also been on fire crew, and it sounds like a good gig…dangerous, hard, exciting…so anyway. Officially my new goal!
I may have the opportunity to do this, but now I’m not sure. I guess they’re looking to hire, especially younger women to have a more diverse demographic. So when I finally get to stop dreaming about it and start doing it, I’m confronted with the frightening reality of how real this job really would be. I could die. Could I really do it?
I don’t have to decide anything right now. I can’t leave my current job, but would it be so bad if something that was a childhood dream turned out to be just too scary. I have someone depending on me now, what happens to them if I die?

My interview went well for my local department but not well enough it seems, got a letter saying I was not moving on in the selection prosses. Next year though eh?
Hey, I live in New Zealand and have a goal of becoming a firefighter. The recruitment process is hough over here (I imagine anywhere really) but I am relishing the challenge of not only getting strong and fit for the physical but all making sure I have a great application that shines through.
If (and it does happen) people say I can’t do it cause I’m a girl or that I’m too big (not many size 0 women could drag a person out of a building), I just use that as fuel for my fire (ironic) to get in!
Seriously I can’t wait to be in there helping people on what could be the worst day of their lives – or helping them prevent it!
Cheers
Lisa

I am in my EMT basic class as we speak and I am doing well so far. I also have an interview with the local fire department to try and get on with them as a volunteer. The people I was working with said I would get in no question, but I’m still getting the jitters about it.
All of this Im hoping will get me well on my way to having a career in it.
It’s kinda weird having a goal, a life goal, that I can actually picture attaining. I was one of those kids who never knew what they wanted to do. And the more I go down this path the more it exites me and the harder I want to work for it.
Wish me luck

I grew up in the fire dept. My dad, grandfather, two uncles, two aunts and a cousin are all fire fighters. I remember sitting at the fire house while my dad went to a call, watching them put on their gear and hop on a truck and speed down the street, it still makes me jealous. Hopefully I’ll start fire school in February.
Also, I’m tired of people telling me I can’t do it because I’m a girl. I want to prove to them that I can.
ive wanted to do this forever… ill have to wait at least 4 yrs so im at least 18… but ill do it… ull see
