become a firefighter

I have always wanted to be a firefighter. This is a goal I WILL accomplish.

I am a retained Firefighter at the moment but want to be a full time Firefighter within 3 years!

I just signed up to this website because i saw a thread about firefighters. Since I am a firefighter, I felt complelled to write about the job and how one can become a firefighter. Wouldn’t you know it, within one hour a nice young lady gave me a cheer. That was cool. Thanks Kelbelle. Look forward to reading about everyones goals.

First off I take great exception from the guy who said firefighting is a great second job. It’s your career, your number one and only real job. Any attitude besides that is highly frowned upon, and in my experience, those who have this attitude are totally useless in emergency situations. If you treat this like a part time job, stay in the truck and watch. Maybe you can become a photo freakin journalist. Second, advanced medical training is a bonus. Third, focus on civil servant cities and take the test. Finally, obtain veteran preference by joining a branch of the military.

I’ve conquered EMS and just recently joined a fire company.
I’m off to fire school next.

I’ve always wante to be a firefighter because my mom is one.. but the schooling is crazy expensive.;;; but i’ll get it one day.. :)

Been doing it for 5 years now. Because of this activity I have:

1. Quit Smoking
2. Started eating better
3. Gget at least 8 hours of sleep per night
4. Started exercising

I originally got certified as a FF in 1995. Then EMT in 1996. I joined the Army as a Combat Medic and served until 2006 on active duty. I just finished Paramedic school, but only after having to recertify as an EMT in the state of Florida( CLASS AND CLINICALS).
I have been on many list, I have been on a few interviews, I have filled out countless applications, I even I have a collection of “we regret” letters. I have been trying and I have gotten close. This year, I know will be the year. For those of you that are discouraged. You are not alone. Keep trying. It is worth it. Try not to blame others. I was arrested three times when I was younger and that is the main reason I have not gotten in. But I understand that and I am not giving up. I figure I will give it one more try. In the mean time, dont just sit there waiting. Live your life. Get another career. If you ever get in, you can do both! Do not let life pass you by as you wait for the job. And one last thing. JOIN The Army National Guard. That has been the biggest help for me. They pay for all my training and education.Plus if you get in, its a great second job, with excellent benefits and retirement. After volunteering at a dept., and testing at many cities, I got the job. I’m going to be a firefighter for the the capitol city of Madison, Wisconsin. I can’t be more excited to work full-time for this dept.

Time and effort paid off!!!
