I haven’t started to volunteer yet, but I’ve been to the orientation of the animal shelter I want to volunteer at. I have an interview scheduled with the volunteer coordinator. After the interview, I am to sign up for a “how to” class, then I am on my way to making the lives of dogs and cats a little bit better!

How to volunteer for a good cause"It took me months to find a place to volunteer that was near and something I actually wanted to do, but it was definatly worth the wait."
How I did it: I looked on volunteering websites and asked friends if they knew of anywhere I could volunteer. When I found somewhere I sent them an application form and an e-mail, it took them a while to get back to me because they were so busy. Then I went to look around and loved it. I made sure I mentioned all the experience I'd had in that area which helped. Lessons & tips: Ask around, usually people will know of somewhere or even volunteer themselves at a place that you'd like to volunteer. If you can't find anywhere advertising for volunteers then call charities and organizations or e-mail them and ask if they'd like a volunteer. Say that you're commited, organizations get a lot of volunteers that only work a couple of times and then leave, if you look willing to help longer term they'll be keen to take you on. Make sure you mention all your experience, or if you don't have any just show them how eager to help you are. Good luck! Resources: www.do-it.org.uk |

How I did it: I went to a local animal shelter and signed up for an orientation date. I showed up on that day and stayed for about 2 hours listening about dogs, cats, rules and regulations. Then I signed up for a mentor. It was mandatory. Ever since that day, I have never regretted my many hours spent sitting in a small room listening to someone talk, walking from bus stop to the shelter (a good 10 blocks) or spending hours every week. Truth is, I real… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I went online and found a website that matched you up with volunteer opportunities and they sent me a list of possiblities. I called and followed up and it was a great experience. Read how I did it…

In the local Army Reserves Unit in my community. It’s a group to support the family members of Weekend Warriors, at home or abroad. Great organization!

This summer I started volunteering my services as a Sign Language Interpreter at Church Under the Bridge. It’s great to be able to use my skills towards helping people get a message they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

I’m participating in a walk-a-thon the 26th of this month with some co-workers.

I didn’t think about this goal too much. I often think of volunteering as some big thing you should commit to. But in reality live been volunteering time and effort to putting care packages for soldiers over seas. Sure its not through an organization and there is no glory in what I’m doing. But I think it still makes an impact. At least on an individual scale.
I think america is full of people that deserve just as much attention as those in developing countries and I guess this is my own personal way of trying to give back. I still want to do a habitat project but maybe ill be more specific about it. SO I’m marking this as done and I’ll add habitat.
There’s a lot of things I’ve almost done, but for some reason or another it didn’t work out. I’m set on making it work this time, but my volunteer project I have in mind may take me a bit longer to complete than if it were at a local organization. It will happen though!

I’ve been talking about volunteering for habitat for humanity forever. I think this is the year for that. perhap thats my goal for next month. I’ve got a lot of other little things I’m trying to accomplish now. I bet I can get my husband in on it too.
I’m going to take part in the Big Brothers Big Sisters project, where they match you up with a kid in a home/difficult circumstances. You then visit them regularly and build a sort of mentoring relationship. Went for the training sessions last weekend, so things are finally on a role. Will probably get matched round the end of Feb, looking forward to it.
