I’m lactose intolerant and don’t particularly care for black coffee. Its too harsh for me wee sensitive tummy. I got hooked on tea a few years ago, and would never go back, save the occassional Cuban cafe con leche.
Then I discovered one better… loose tea. If you’re serious about tea, loose is the only way to go. Usually the quality is much better and you get more for your money. The filtering and things seem cumbersome but you can buy tea bags and fill them for later use.
BTWS, does anyone know of any good tea sites, community or retail? I’m pretty satisfied w/ the company I buy from, www.indulgeteas.com, but I’d also like to find a good tea community site.

in my opinion, it is much harder to go coffee->tea than the other way around; coffee seems to me as much more addictive 5 years ago
I’ve always drunk tea. Always. Only tried coffee once and hated the stuff. But I’ve noticed what coffee does to other people like my dad, who has to have a cup of coffee by nine every morning or he gets really angry and starts becoming frantic about it. Tea just gives me a boost and tastes really good, plus I don’t find it addictive and it doesn’t make me go all hyper and odd.
So yeah, hit the kettle people and keep your tea bags on hand. 5 years ago
I converted over to tea a few years ago, it is much better for studying – a calmer stimulation whereas coffee tends to make you want to go out and party, whereas you need calm patience for the endless boredom of studying.
The problem is I recently heard an interview with an expert on Fluoride. Fluoride is toxic and a strong pharmacological agent. they used to use it to control hyperthyroidism 6 – 10 mg/day, since it particularly affects the thyriod – perhaps by antagonizing Iodide, and maybe by damaging iodide receptors since it apparently is cytotoxic.
Green or black tea has naturally high fluoride, it is one of the very few plants that absorb it from the soil. they think it might be to deter animals from eating it since it makes them nauseous. I have gotten nauseous from drinking black tea without milk, I thought it was the bitter antioxidants like catechins but maybe not.
Anyway natural Fluoride is not as bad as the industrial sludge they put in our drinking water which is not NaF but hydro-fluoro-salicylic acid plus other toxins like arsenic 1 ppb. Acc to Dr Kennedy the US EPA (scientific advisory branch of the US govt) found 0.2 ppm in drinking water harmful to infants (US govt rec’s 10X that in drinking water). A cup of Lipton’s ice tea was found to have 8 ppm (or about 2 mg).
So everything was turned on its head for me a few days ago with this talk – shouldn’t just rely on one talk so I’ll be checking up – might even do my masters thesis on it. But he seemed very credible, a dentist with a degree in comparative biochem and physiology. it might turn out that the natural F is not too bad… but I doubt it. Fluoride is apparently also put in all sorts of medical drugs as a potent physiological activator – another reason to avoid the medical crap.
Sorry to throw a wrench in the works… it threw me off quite severely, but that’s nutrition…
I have a slight addiction to caffeine – need one cup a day to avoid headaches and malaise – so will divide it between yerba mate and coffee until I find out more. A box of Lipton’s has already gone in the garbage. 5 years ago
We’ve all known here in Blighty for ages but now it’s official:
“Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as drinking plenty of water and may even have extra health benefits, say researchers”
From the Beeb:
Tea better for you than water
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it coffee drinkers! 5 years ago
Tea is the ultimate drink, so good, it is even scientifically proven to be addictive. Now thats a hellova drink!
+ Coffee aint so good you want a strong pick me up drink red bull a strong coffee rots your stomach wall and makes your breath stink! 5 years ago
Eh, I’ve made friends with all the regulars at the cafe now. And making friends is nice, right? 6 years ago
If you want to convert people, you need to serve them really good tea. Forget the bags.
I have a whole kitchen cabinet full of all kinds of good tea. I prefer a nice pot of English breakfast tea, but I can’t leave well enough alone. I always toss in some spiced herbal tea with it. Pour on the boiling water. Keep a tea strainer handy. I like a splash of organic milk.
One full pot hits the spot for an early morning wake up.
Long Live Tea! 6 years ago
move away from Starbucks when my militant tea drinking campaign turned ugly. 6 years ago
This isn’t going very well; my coworker introduced me to Coral Tree Cafe in Brentwood, and I go there every single day for a Mocha now. I don’t even drink tea anymore! How do I get off the junk?? 6 years ago
I just recently made the switch myself. I mean coffee is almost essential in college, but it had some bad side effects on me. The sweating and heart racing were not worth it. Haha I now swear by tea. 6 years ago
Coffee has high cafiene wich dubbles you chances for cancer.
drinking coffee may interfere with your body’s ability to keep homocysteine and cholesterol levels in check, most likely by inhibiting the action of the vitamins folate, B12 or B6. Coffee has been previously associated with increased risk of stroke and rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have also shown that caffeine in coffee can raise blood pressure and levels of stress hormones, and if consumed in large quantities it can lead to heart palpitations, jitters and nervousness.
tea helps strengthen teeth. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay (which coffee does the exact opposite). Tea contains vitamins A, B1 and B2. Tea has minus kilojoules, therefore helping efforts to reduce weight. Tea can boost attention, accuracy and alertness and has been shown to help the mind 'multitask'. The polyphenols contained in tea slow the absorption of caffeine making tea much more refreshing and revitalising than coffee, as it stays in the body longer. 6 years agoTea is yummy and good for the soul. And it’s better for you than coffee. Plus it’s the thing to do in London. So to all you coffee drinkers out there: Stop and have a tea party. 6 years ago
I recently acquired a job and became vaguely respectable. Well, less disreputable, anyway. But I found myself profoundly undercaffeinated, and I had to go to Starbuck’s (the only nearby cafe) both before and during work, which was (a) expensive, and (b) disgusting, oh, and© lame. So I started brewing my tea at work, which led to tea-envy on the part of my co-workers. Now I make it in one of those 2-liter carafes with the button on the top you push to eject the tea, and that and a few disposable cups have everyone drinking tea all the time.
Unfortunately, I’ve had a hard time persuading my coworkers that Lapsang Souchong is a good thing, but one goal at a time. 6 years ago
There is an opposing goal but the coffee drinkers. As a recent convert to the way of the tea I believe that I should inform you guys that there is another way:

when you see wired workmates wringing their hands and stressing their tits off over work shit, tell them not to drink so much coffee and chill out… it winds them up to start with, but then they look at that cheap coffee they are drinking and eventually give up 7 years ago
For 3 yrs I owned and operated a late-late night coffee house. My Significant other and I, who are avid tea enthusiasts got a really big kick out of expanding people’s liquid intake habits. The biggest trip for us was educating gutter punks (some homeless, some that just thought it was cool not to bathe and to wear leather, spikes, and anarchy signs) on the qualities and subtilties of different types of teas. A suprisingly large number of them found great joy in the sophistication of fine tea drinking, and would proceed to ‘culture’ their friends. When it came time for me to permenantly close down shop we had droves of customers (mainly teen – college age) of vast diversity who prefered very specific fine teas to coffee. Many of them also developed pretty admirable chess playing skills. It was fun and rewarding to my significant other (now husband) and I, but it still amuses me endlessly to think about. 7 years ago
Peppermint tea in coffee shops is cheaper, and doesn’t feel like it’s breaking my liver. If you’re on London, and at Cafe Nero, I’d recommend it.
Any other good tea tips? 7 years ago
Crazy but brilliant goal. One of my other goals is to drink less tea though, 20 cups a day is no good. 7 years ago
I find that using tea all day instead of coffee has made for less shakiness, less crash and less stomach ugliness. Its an all around better experience, plus I get this gentle, yet intense caffine high that lasts longer and seems more sustainable.
I still drink some coffee too, but usually an espresso drink later on in the day, just for fun. It gives me none of the negative effects that I usually got from coffee.
A great way to start with tea is to check out Upton Tea Imports over on the East Coast. They sell via the web, have a huge catalog, sell nice samples and have excellent service.
For my morning tea/ coffee replacement, I usually get a CTC (cut, tear, curl) Assam black tea. It’s rich and thick, and sweet and malty. Its a perfect coffee replacement!
Upton has quite a few CTC’s, but its best to try and grab a bunch of samplers if you don’t know what your looking for. They are cheap and will help you decide you tea tastes. 7 years ago
