I was “normal” in high school but when I turned 18 something happened and I lost my ability to look people in the eye. I keep trying to get better at it but I overanalyze my problem and the next thing I know I feel more confused. Guess I need to practice letting go of the anxiety I feel when I have to look at someone. Having to reclaim my power is one of the greatest challenges I will face in this lifetime.

It’s super easy when it’s with people I’ve met more than once. I haven’t met anyone new in the past few days… so I’ll say I’ve been doing well?

I thought I was doing well at this...  — 3 weeks ago

but then was faced with some people that I didn’t feel comfortable with and totally FAILED.

I just knew they were judging me… and I was sooooo awkward about it I had so much trouble with eye contact. Working on it!

Practice: Look yourself in the eye in the mirror  — 1 month ago

Just stand there for a minimum of two minutes. Time yourself. Stare into your own eyes. What could anyone hope to find in there? Are you hiding anything? Are you certain that is you?

Just seems like an invasion of privacy  — 2 months ago

Look me in the eye and you’re searching for something. My eyes tell the truth. You’ve no right to search.

gotten a LOT better at this over time. I have always felt uncomfortable about looking people in the eye, and have often felt it to be inappropriate. Sometimes it still feels weird and too intense or personal but I am getting used to it, probably because of my job.

goes rather well. I’m paying attention quite regularly.

Looking people in the eye does still feel extremely direct most of the time, though

this has become so natural now. it doesn’t matter who it is, i am always looking right into their eyes while we are talking. newer examples include my new preceptor, the attending physician, and the residents… it really is amazing because if someone is talking to several people, then they turn to you and meet your gaze, you can sense the appreciation and respect from them because you are being attentive to what they are saying… eye contact can be very powerful
