I recently moved from Chicago, IL to Orlando, FL with no savings, an uncertain apartment with a friend, and no car (I found an $80 plane ticket). It’s hard, but it was totally worth it.

I’m a New Yorker.

I’m making the move tomorrow. I should be more nervous but my iPod just crapped out on me – so I’m irritated right now. Maybe that’s the gods trying to distract me so I won’t have a meltdown.

Got my plane ticket to NY for the end of this month. Now I just need to finish unpacking from my last trip and pack for a new life.
ktcreole needs to get busy working on these goals!
not New York for college. I thought about moving back home afterwards, but I really like the independence of not having relatives or high school buddies around. I’m forced to make new friends and experience new things that are changing me (helpfully for the positive). I’m very pleased with this decisions
Moving is a pain, but sometimes you gotta do it. Here are the biggest tips for doing it right:
1) Start early. That goes for packing, making plans for the truck, finding a new place, etc.
2) This one is key. Get rid of absolutely everything you don’t need. You want to spend as little time and money packing as possible. Yes, you’ll want your furniture, but maybe not your entire DVD/CD collection. Books are notorious for taking up valuable space and adding tons of weight. Get rid of the ones you won’t read again or will never read. Donate your clothes to Goodwill (not all of them, just the ones you don’t want or need).
I really can’t stress getting rid of the junk as possible. Also, don’t spend time and money packing canned foods or boxes of cereal or any food at all, unless it’s really, really important. Trust me: they will have grocery stores where you’re going. Travel as light as possible. It’ll save you time, money, and prevent you from experiencing any more stress than necessary.

abbygirl asks,
“How does one actually DO this? When you're young & need to work someplace that you can't interview for from 3,000 miles away? And how do you find a place to stay if you don't have a job yet? Is this even possible?”

“My sister and I are moving from California to New York and need to know the best way to move all our crap. Is having someone move it for us better than renting a truck and doing it ourselves?”
