CEatherton is finishing things and starting new ones
I may as well learn the programming behind things if I’m gonna learn how to animate, it will help me for my benefit and it’ll give me that added curve I need when finding a job in art.
How I did it: I did it largely on my own. I was doing a Multimedia course which had flash as a subject, However the center did not have a good actionscript faculty. So i started off making a game (tetris) which gave me the confidence that i can be a flash developer. From then on i have enhanced my skills greatly.
Lessons & tips: 1. Be passionate about it
2. Never give up even if it seems too hard, specially if you have no programming background.
3. Research. Make a habit of researching methods/ properties etc that you come across. In the process of doing so you will learn 10 new things that aren't immediately related to task.
4.Often one problem that beginners face is that even though they understand what the code does, they are not able to write code themselves to tackle even small applications. The way out is
A) Must be completely familiar with the important constructs of programming as well as various often used methods/properties in actionscript.
Write down on a piece of paper all the different programing constructs that you learnt like variable, function and alongside mention the syntax, their pupose and circumstance where they would be used.
B) When tackling an application write the steps involved in it. Break it into steps. And then see how each step can be achieved using the constructs you already know.
5. Keep tacking new problems and applications. By hook or by crook get it done. Do some research, check around. That will give you confidence.
6. Go and take a course or eat the brains of the actionscrit developer in your office.

Hi i m web designer. I wanna to learn Flash Action Script. Please help me….
WorkHorse is trying to make it through the day on 2 hrs of sleep
For a long time now I’ve wanted to become more proficient at web design. I do graphics and illustrations now and have some what of a concept about actionscript but its the equivalent of knowing how to say “wheres the bathroom?” in a foreign language.
I’ve bought books and read tutorials but I’m more of a hands on kinda person. If anyone has any information of how you learned or are learning or anything information at all that you can provide to aid me in this goal, believe me I would be ever so grateful!

I lucked into a crash-course in Action Script at work this week, taking a photography browsing feature our designer mocked up and realizing a prototype in Flash instead of JavaScript. It’s going quite well in that I started with with a head devoid of AS knowledge and expect to finish it by the end of the week.
I generally code with text editors rather than IDEs, so typing in the blank slate of the Actions window comes a lot more naturally to me than twiddling movie frames ever did. I think it’s kind of amusing that the JavaScript and ActionScript languages vie for dominance of the rich application environment, since they resemble each other so strongly and apparently stem from the same source. Switching over is like converting between religions that have a shared holy book, or something. (I mean, it’d be like that if programming wasn’t kinda sciencey.)
i started learning actionScript last year in a 6 weeks course, now i have started searching for a basic guide which would show be the mains of actionScript
i found such matterial for CSS, HTML, but can’t get anything, apart from random tutorials on actionscript,
does anyone have a useful source
thank you
Ok, I set myself a goal for learning actionscript a few years back. I never looked at myself as a programmer or coder but….. This goal is totally worth it. I can now consider myself a Actionsript / Flex / Flash developer.
The reality is this. You will always be learning actionscript. Whatever you do don’t ever think you are going to know it all. I am around some really heigh level developers that I consider 10 times better than me and they are always learning new things about Flash, actionscript, and Flex, and what you can do with the language or Flash Player technologies.
This is by far the best thing I have done in my live. It has totally changed what I do for a living forever.
If you get a chance I am all about helping people learn actionscript. Please check out my blog and all the resources that I link to from there.
