It is worthwhile to some people and pointless to others. I believe it is worthwhile, but definitely not easy (if using PowerPC Mac or Dual Boot).
Go for it… if it’s worth it to you.

Earlier today I installed Ubuntu, I started to learn how things works and have downloaded the bookmarks from del.ic.ous and have started to tweak things. I have installed Thunderbird and are currently working on getting Java and Flash in Firefox

I don’t know how long this took me but it feels like hours. I had trouble partitioning my hard drive, even though Vista makes it easy (about the only thing it does make easy), mostly because I’ve never had the need to partition anything before.
So Ubuntu is there and working fine. I’ll start messing about with it some other day.

Linux is amazing… there are so many reasons Linux is far superior to Windows… and the best reason of all, is that its free! If you’re just starting off, I recommend Ubuntu. Its, in my opinion, the easiest to set up and keep going. If you’re interested in learning how everything works and all the components of Linux, I recommend Gentoo (though you gotta have a lot of patience to work with this distribution).

Linux is great!
I use Ubuntu. I like it, and I’m making preparations to switch from microsoft’s software completely.
Just a few things you should know:
1. ATI graphics cards are a no-go with linux
2. Linux is not windows. (software you use with windows will not work with linux.)
3. Learning linux is no cake walk.
4. You CAN have linux and windows on the same computer

But I can’t get it to work, my computer stubbornly loads Windows when I’m booting from it. I’ll check the boot order on my computer when I find it again. But I’m all confused I have run another distro of Linux that way on the machine earlier. I bought one when the one I done didn’t work and I figured I messed up when I burned it was cheap anyway. I can’t connect it to the network right now if I get it to start…. ‘shuffles feet’ because lost the password.. I’ll fix that later though.

Get rid of windows today!
I would suggest ubuntu as a starting distrobution.
Good luck!

I installed Ubuntu on my new work laptop. I have installed Linux before (last time for real was in the nineties) and used it for computer graphics labs at the university but never used it on a day-to-day-basis.
Despite the Ubuntu Live CD the install process wasn’t such a pleasant experience since the graphics card installed in my T60 wasn’t supported by the ordinary installer. So I had to use the alternate installer and update the driver by hand. But after that (and some struggling to repartition my drive and still have a working Vista dual boot) I’m pleased with using Ubuntu.
So now I use Mac OS X, Ubuntu and Windows XP (mostly to listen to Spotify and to sync my photos from the phone) every day (and Windows Vista every other day or so).
I’m quite familiar with Linux and all I need is some good partitioning software or a second hard drive.
