Jocelyn and I went to a karaoke bar on a friend’s invitation. It was a nice atmosphere and a great DJ. However, it filled up fast and I only got one song in. It was also a bit of a drive. I’d like to find one locally.

I became addicted to karaoke during my time stationed in Japan from 2005-07. I came to New York afterwards and reverted to my reclusive nature (karaoke is one of the few “outside” activities I actually derive any pleasure from.)
I went to a couple of places here and there during my first year, but I couldn’t find anything that had the same vibe as the place I loved in Japan (Big Echo!)
Recently, I started taking in more guests at my apartment (more than 10 in the past two months with about a weeklong stint for each) and saw each visit as an opportunity to karaoke (“Wanna stay in New York City in trade for going to karaoke with me one night?”) I’ve since then tallied enough visits to receive a free hour at this one karaoke bar I really do love (Karaoke Duet 35!)
Even better, through some divine intervention, Karaoke Duet will be opening another karaoke spot on 42nd St and 2nd Ave, which is literally two blocks away from where I work.
Guess who’s going to be singing for lunch from now on?

I just went on Friday night and have managed to go about once a month. A far cry from the 2x a week I used to do, but it’s more fun to go less often.

Went last night, sang 2 new songs!
“Groove is in the Heart”
and “Barbie Girl”
Well, in the past month or so I’ve gone karaokeing (is that a word?) at least 3 times, and have sung at least 2 songs each occasion. So, I think I’m back in business.
Last week I discovered the Boxcar in Magnolia. This is the best karaoke in town. The selection is absolutely incredible-I think because the KJ uses a laptop instead of cd’s. And we each were able to sing 3 songs, and I’m sure could have kept going if we’d stayed later. I’m much more likely to go to karaoke knowing that I’m actually going to get on the stage as often as I’d like. I might even try to work up some new songs for tomorrow night, because of course I’m going back!
oh man… I’m so much happier now that I have a ton of karaoke files on my computer, and I got o karaoke bars more often… it really gets out a lot of my insecurities to remember that there’s something I can do basically on the spur of the moment that get sme a lot of attention and applause, or that just releases stress. gotta love the oke.
